Newb transfer case question

Last time I did it, I didnt have a pump. I transfered the fluid into another smaller bottle with a hose attached and squeezed the fluid up into the fill hole. It was a small empty bottle of gear oil that I used. Hope this helped.

The fill hole is large enough to fit the typical 1qt container neck into. I just dump it in and squeeze it to empty the low spots.

I keep a couple rolls of various diameter vinyl hose around. They sell it in 10' and 20' rolls at Home Depot under the racks of brass plumbing fittings. Take a funnel or a gear oil bottle with the pointed tip and jam a length of hose on there. You can stand on the side of the vehicle or get in a comfortable position while you fill it that way. Works well for axles too, especially 14 bolts since the fill plug is on the pinion. Makes a good siphon in a pinch too.

They also sell fluid transfer pumps that you put in a drill chuck for $5-$10 at NAPA, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, etc. The hand-pump style ones that thread on to the bottles work well too, but the white one sucks (I've seen it as Performance Tool and some other brands, it threads on to quart and gallon bottles). I've returned more than one because it broke on the first five pumps.

Also, I've seen a threaded cap with a hose barb and length on vinyl tube at WalMart that you thread on to a quart bottle. Would be pretty nice if you put a longer piece on vinyl on there.

if you have a harbor frieght near you , they have them for like $5. otherwise...its a messy job...ask me how I know.

Oh i have :D i still think atf is worse.

No way. No comparison. I can deal with trans and fluid in the garage (which is also the basement) and hear nothing from the wife. Open a rear diff cover and the wife complains about it for days.

I'm used to it. I just use the "wife guage" to know how bad it smells.

:haha:

I use the gear oil bottle nozzle ,it'll fit on an ATF bottle, but beware it wont fit perfectly, and if you squeeze too hard it will pop off and give you a dextron II bath!......I bought a cheap suction gun for this chore long ago,but never can seem to find it when I needed it..last time it went missing for years,I found it in my backyard, where I'd left it to drain, all rusted to hell!..:doah:..

Eh im a plumbing apprentice i deal with $hit all day :D i guess our smellometers are set up different lol

On another note, i was thinkin of riggin an old oil pump up and make some type of oil filler. I think that would work good. Clean it up real good, get a 5 gal bucket with a top and pop a hole in it, plumb lines down into the bucket and nice long filler line coming off, shove it in and hit the pump with a drill to turn it. Walla

Real men just use a straw. Suck up a mouthful and blow it in........

But otherwise, get one of those pumps that thread onto the bottle. Sta-Lube sells them at PepBoys.
Has a tapered barbed fitting that goes in the hole so you don't have to hold the line in there.

Interestingly enough, regular gear lube does not smell that bad. Its the additive. Before I switched to synthetic, I used to have to add a small bottle of additive to my limited slip rear end on my 79 to stop the clutch chatter.

Maybe 3 ozs. As soon as you opened that bottle, you knew where gear lube got its smell from.

And I don't think anything smells worse than well burnt ATF.

looks easy enough to make with stuff from home depot....:whistle:

You haven't smelled RANK until you get a good whiff of the REAL posi additive they sold that was made from whale sperm!...we had a bottle of Amalie brand stuff ooze all over the parts counter one weekend at the store I worked at,and NOTHING we washed it off with would kill the stench!.....no one wanted to work at that counter for a good 2 years afterwards!...

made from whale sperm!

Actually I have. My father had a small bottle of it that he kept from the Air Force. It was a rust preventive and lube.
Probably did not smell as bad as your stuff, but it was right up there.

But, just to keep the record straight, it was Sperm Whale Oil, not Whale Sperm........
I don't even want to think about having the job of collecting the other........

Sperm whales have a big chamber in their heads filled with that oil. Its thought its used for echolocation.
They use it for a sounding chamber to make the sonic pulses.
