Right now in my 87, my axles and rearends are completely stock. The rear is whining a bit, so I need to have it taken apart and looked at. My calipers are sticking and my brakes are shot.... I also have the stock rally's and some A/T 32" tires....

There is a guy locally selling the following:

I've got a set of 10 bolt axles out of an 89 K5 Blazer. They are 4.10 ratio. The rear has a Detroit mechanical locker with about 10,000 miles. The front is open with newer mile marker lockouts, one new brake caliper, and fairly new pads on both sides. They are stock 30 spline axles, and the gears are made by genuine gear. I daily drove the truck about 5 years ago, the gears probably have 30,000 miles total.

What do you guys think about this? He is also going to throw in the tires and wheels with the asking price for all the above. What would I gain or lose with the 4.10 gearing and the lockers mentioned above.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. I honestly am ignorant to 4-wheel drives and have a lot to learn.

Thanks in advance.
Scott

How much?

4.10 gears are better than stock but the 10 bolts still aren't worth a whole lot.

500 for both axles with the wheels and tires...They're rock crawlers 15X10 street locks

I drive mine daily now... I've entertained the idea of a small lift with 35's and have heard you will want lower gears to run the larger tires.

i would just look for a set of 3/4 axles and swap them in so you dont waste money on regearing.

Thanks man... Didn't know if I came across a good deal too good to pass up or not.

There is a fine line here... it would probably cost you more than $500 to regear your axles (going rate around here is $250 labor + parts) but that's also a lot of money to invest in 10 bolts although for a street driven truck the 10 bolts may last just fine (they have a rep for being weak when paired with bigger tires).

Depending on the tires you'd be getting with them (size, tread depth, condition, etc) this might be a decent deal.

Just know that with an axle swap your bound to have extra cost - possible u-bolts, gear oil, bearing repack with seals, etc..

Be sure to pull the diff covers and inspect the gears before any purchase!! Post pics here if you're not sure.

More than helpful, Bud. I really appreciate your insight.

Thanks!

If the tires are decent and what you want, and assuming the axles are in good shape, then $500 is a good deal IMO. 4.10's are just about perfect for 33-ish inch tires and okay for even 35's, and definitely better than stock (3.73 at the best, and quite likely 3.08 or 3.42).

There is no way I would spend the money to have 10-bolts regeared, but I would seriously consider paying $500 for a set of 10-bolts with the gears, Detroit, and decent set of tires and wheels.

That really is not a bad deal. If it has a detroit locker, they go for 250-350 used.
Plus if you are getting 4 good tires. If you figgure all the extra parts in. You are paying about 150 or less for both axles. $50- $100 per axle seems to be the going rate for 10 bolts these days. The 30 spline axles are a little bit stronger than the older 27 spline.
It is a lot cheaper than regearing. Plus you will end up with a bunch of extra parts.
