My basket case 83' has a TH350 w/ NP208. The transfer case slips out of gear under stress and then the tranny won't shift past 2nd gear. I bought a mid 73' TH350 with a NP208 that both have 20k on a rebuild. Here is my quandary:

Do I install the 73' TH350 w/ NP 208 or fix my existing? I use the vehicle for summer cruising and light off road for camping. If I go to the new transmission and transfer case, I have to change out linkage for transfer case, change driveshafts, change out auto locking hubs, change shifting unit and mounting, and get a 203 conversion kit. All of this sounds like a headache. I've built many motors but never touched a transmission or case innards. I would appreciate any input.

cheers

I know this isn't Pirate but a newby looking for a tranny is hella funny.

Now to assist in the question - if possible, the transmission sounds like an adjustment or missing vacuum hose type problem. The Transfer case rebuild is a lot cheaper than swapping in your "new" stuff.

It's not a vacuum line. Something has gone wrong as when it is supposed to shift to 3rd, it goes to neutral. My diagnostics lead me to something like a b side solenoid failure or something to that affect. I forget already as it has been 16 months. I am sitting around over thinking what to do. I think I need to sell the "new" stuff and fix the old

Solenoid?

It's been a long day, so let me grab my Auto Transmission book........

Like I said, I'm no transmission guy, just a motorhead. My transmission book says "If you find that there is first and second gear only, B solenoid stuck on. If there is foreign material in the solenoid, the PCM signal is grounded or the solenoid return wire to ground is pinched, check the 3-2 shift solenoid ON failure"

I assume that is the little electrical connection on my transmission that replaced the old vacuum line connection of the older transmissions like seen on a TH400. I checked the electrical and everything seemed fine, no problem there. The transmission shifts to 3rd, but acts like a clutch being in on a manual - just revs the motor. So I pulled the transmission and transfer case 16 months ago and put the project to the side.
