Are the ring and pinions in 10 bolt axles the same front and rear? I have a used set of 4:88 gears that I bought for my race car, but I might just put them in the Suburban instead. If I did, I'd like to run the used set up front if possible and buy a new set for the rear.

Thanks,
Dave

The diffs are the same, and I'm pretty sure that the front does not take a reverse cut gear or anything. I looked around on ebay and motive gear, and they do not list a front or rear gear, they just list a 10 bolt gear. I think they are the same.

friend had late 70's transam. had 2.42 rear gears. we junked a 10 bolt front. had 3.42 gears.

swaped them over and wow woke that car up. fit just fine.

Thanks for taking time to answer. Found confirmation of what you guys said on eBay.

front and rear are the same excluding the ifs truck fronts. 2.41 and 2.56 are 2 series, and then 2.73 up are 3 series, or should be. Second gen camaros used a 8.5 rear from 71-81, some g bodys did as well, and some s10s. Easiest outside identifier is the "Ears" on the pumpkin.

Does your race car have a 8.5" 10 bolt or the 7.5" 10 bolt?

Just curious what your intended use is for the suburban (31's or 35's with 4.88 gears)? Just sounds like you'll be spinning some high RPMs, especially if you're going to be on the highway much.

For example with the following assumptions, 700R4, NP208, 31" Tires, 4.88 you'll be turning around 2600 RPMs at 70mph.

Another example with the same above except 35" tires, 2300 RPMs at 70mph

Maybe not so bad with the 700R4... :dunno:

700r4 like tall rpm so thay dont cycle in/out of overdrive or bog down bad in overdrive and heat up the tranny and smoke it.

just going from home to the camp house and riding the back roads, 55mph tops, and yes, the Camaro has a 8.5" rear end. Mostly gumbo mud in the bottoms and sand over red clay in the hills.

Thanks guys,
Dave
