Alright, i live in NY. I just bought my 86 k5 from new jersey and i went to go get it inspected. Mechanically the things pretty good. The only thing still bugging me is the engine was replaced and the mechanic said theres some code on it and he cant tell what size it is, so if anyone can help with that...? But, now for the bigger problem. He said it wont pass emissions because someone ripped all the emissions stuff off of it. Everythign is gone except for the cat. Now he said that stuff would be hard to find and even he wouldnt really be able to get it, but if i got it he would be able to put it in for me. Now my question is how screwed am i? How hard is it to find this stuff and where could i get it? Hes getting me an exact list of what i need in a bit so, ill update this post. But if anyone has had this problem before please lend me some advice. Thanks!

Alright, the code which i found on the left side exhaust manifold which probably means nothing is... GM then what looks like 16079295 then under that 2301 and a big N on the manifold.

As for as for the emissions parts i need. i need:

EGR Valve and Gasket and bolts
Charcoal cannister hoses
EGR Valve
EGR Solenoid
Distributor Delay Valve
Valve in Coolant neck

Any ideas? Im probbably gonna start scrounging around junkyards but i have no idea what this stuff is so..

the emissions stuff shouldn't be tohard to come up with if you have a descent junkyard around your area. The numbers you need to ID the motor are stamped in to the block behind the drivers side head

Im guessing theres no site thats sells them new or off old vehicles right? Do i need to know anything about the engine to get these parts or are they universal between the 305/350. I just opend the hood to take a quick looksee where you said and theres no way im getting behind the drivers side head without some serious work. Let me know what vehicles i can rip it off from? im sure it will help if i can grab at more than old 86 k5 v8s. Thanks

You may try using a small handheld mirror to look behind the head. I don't know how much clearance is back there...try it.

The parts you list should interchange just fine. I'd be more concerned that whoever put that engine in did a 'performance' rebuild, which may or may not affect your ability to pass emissions.

on my old engine, i used my digital camera to take a pic of the numbers, then messed with the pic on the computer until they were all readable.

don't know about NY, but down here, you can find that stuff all over the place, used or new.

If you are lucky, the block has *stamped* (not cast) letters/numbers on the passenger side front of the engine, on a small pad just forward of the cylinder head.

If you look down behind the alternator (assuming you have a passenger side alternator) you should be able to see it, leaning over the top of the motor. May need to clean the pad off, and/or use a flashlight to see it.

That code will at least tell you what the block came from, if it is still present.

Alright ill have to start looking around in junk yards, if anyone knows where i can get this stuff new ill appreciate the help. Ill try looking for the id plate of the block tommorow morn, see what i can come up with. Whats a performance rebuild? Am i going to need to worry about more than the emissions? I doubt its performace, nothing else on the truck looks to be nothign else but stock. Stock manifolds and whatnot.

and one of these my be the Distributor Delay Valve you need

hope this helps

Thank you so very much! Now all i need is two more peices, ill take another look online. thanks alot. Now if i can only find what what engine this is. Also, anoyne got a name for the "Valve in coolant neck"?

Dealerships usually want lots of money for their parts. I would avoid them unless they are the only place you can find a particular part. if you haven't already aquired one, agood service manual or Chilton's manual would greatly aid you in the proper names, location and hooking up and function of these parts as well.

you can get most of that at your local mom/pop parts store... smog pump stuff, egr parts, and maybe a.i.r stuff too, especially if they're an ac delco distributor...

what did they do with the a.i.r fittings in the top of the exhaust manifolds? plug em?

You can use silly puddy to pull the numbers off the block if you can't see them. Flatten out the silly puddy into a pancake and then take an impression of the numbers. Read the numbers from the silly puddy using a mirror:)

When I said performance, I mean someone may have re-cammed the engine with something other than stock. I was unfortunate enough to get a "performance" crate engine straight from Chevy. They put an old Corvette cam profile from the 60's in it. The problem is, the rest of the motor is the standard base model 350 long block. That cam originally went into an engine with about a 10.5:1 compression ratio, and mine's closer to 8:1. It has terrible low-speed (read street driving) performance, gets horrendous gas mileage (11mpg on the highway, no lift, stock tire sizes) even with an overdrive tranny, and when it's idling, you better hope you're upwind from the exhaust pipe, as the fumes will make you sick (too much overlap in the cam, half the gas goes straight out the tailpipe).

It's common knowledge that any performance upgrades will often cause WORSE performance unless other components are upgraded as well. My engine seems to be GM's way of reminding us of that. BTW, a friend bought the exact same motor and put it in his '79 Firebird. He says even in that car it's totally gutless.

I seriously doubt mine would pass an inspection. Luckily it's still titled and registered in Tennessee, where they don't inspect. I'm hoping a new cam will give me back my power and gas mileage, while reducing emissions.

The air fittings at the top of the manifold (if i know what your talking about and i think i do) Look to be left open. Its a small inch 1/2 pipe coming up off the top of the manifold and is only about 2 inches long and it just sits there unplugged. But my mechanic didnt mention any "a.i.r." components. Odd. Ill check out some parts stores, dealerships i knew would cost an arm and a leg so ill leave that for last, ill try to find out what my engine is, but i can tell you it has eldebrock heads, or thats what it looks like.

Alright, this really is a pain in the ass and im not sure if its even worth it to put in. I looked on the block and i couldnt see any numbers, some guy showed me where they would be and that i just need to clean it off, so i guess ill try that but is it even really worth it to put this stuff back on or should i just get someone to pass me? Its probably a 350 because i doubt someone would drop a new engine in there and do this if it were a 305. What do you guys think i should do? As i said im just using it as a toy in the summer and in the snow, its not my daily driver and i wanted to put a lift and exhaust on it so... think its worth it to put all this crap back on or what? I guess ll try the degreeser tommorow or something. Or do you think im better off calling the original owner?

your best bet would be to find a same year blazer as your and look at the emissions stuff. it'll be a pain but will be worth it.
