Ok so lets say this... I love my SMC465.. however.. the wifey dont drive a stick and i think that is part of why she doesnt truely enjoy the truck..

so in march im gonna try and get a crew cab... swap over my lift and all that... shorten it, bob bed, rollbar, etc... more of a 3+3Truggy....

but im also considering a 2005 6L...
local yard said $1200 for motor (45k miles), wiring harness, ecu, drive by wire unit....ill also get the fuel tank and a few other things all from the same truck..
now to go from the automatic in it to my smc i have to spend $500 for trans parts.. clutch, pressure plate, bearing.... well what if i can get an automatic for that price... is it worth going to a 2005 6L and auto trans?

can i mate it to my np205? is it strong enough to handle some abuse of detroitted 1tons on 40's????

like 4real.... i dont think this is a stick.. so his trans seems to hold up to a 434 with about 600hp...

4l80es are extremely strong and a 205 is fairly easy to bolt up. I would hold out for an 80, I don't really care for the 4l60s.

X3. I love my manuals. But there is somthing to be said about having a trustworthy auto with overdrive. 4l80 falls in that category

I better get mine driving stick before I get jammed into that rut...

If its a trail only or driven short distances than a th400 is the way to go. 4L80Es are good transmission, so good in fact that the rebuild price on them is horrendous.

Im a big fan of the 5 and 6 speed allison 1000s that were found behind the 8.1L big blocks but have never read on anyone putting one behind a gen III/IV small block. Im sure it can be done though.

I dont think the price difference between having a 60 and an 80 rebuilt is very large, especially for the strength difference. The allison I would imagine would be much more expensive to build. When I had a quote to have my 80 rebuilt (no hard parts, good clutches) it was ~$950 including R&R. I had a 400 built by the same shop with good clutches and no hard parts for about the same price including R&R.

In my opinion the only reason to run a 60 over an 80 is space. Or possibly the parasitic drag in a race car. If you've got a car or a small vehicle the 80 is huge. For our application I dont think there's a better automatic trans.

You must be doing it wrong.

Taking an old S10 Blazer out in the pasture, sticking it in 4 low, and teaching a girl how to drive a stick generally got my stick played with as a reward.
