Everybody is swapping in TBI because you can make it fit on older blocks, but what about starting with a new block, and running actual fuel injection. I know there's hardware available to tune a newer vehicle, i.e. Hypertech, Edge, but is there software out there to give you full programming power?

yeah, I mean port injection. I don't count tbi as fuel injection since it's just a computer controlled carb... Sorry for the confusion.

MPFI i take it then, right? theres lot of stuff for 3rd gen sbcs...decent amount for 96+ vortecs. HPtuners and EFIlive are the biggest 2 programs that you can reflash the PCM how you want with them. I have HPT for my 5.3 and love it, but have messed with efilive, and they both can do most all of the same stuff. EFIlive may be a TAD bit better overall. The prices are real comparable, but its $$$$ to get started. The pro version of HPT, which i def recommend, is 650$ starting, but has enough credits to tune up to 4 GENIII v8s...other motors require more, but its worth it IMFO.

Not to split hairs, but TBI and computer controller carbs are two different things. TBI actually has two fuel injectors that are pulse width controlled by the ECU. Computer controlled carbs are an abomination - I'm with you there.

Depending on how new you are talking there is TPI that will fit on the normal Small block chevy, this can be programed very easy in the same way as TBI can be. And TBI is not a computer controlled carb, a Carb uses the airflow in the engine to draw the fuel through a metering valve where fuel injection uses a injector to meter the flow of fuel.

Search for Greg72's posts on MegaSquirt and such ... lots of options beyond factory fuel injection.

The injection is somewhat responsible for the newer motor performance, but a large part is due to the almost complete redesign of the engine itself.

MPFI has advantages over TBI, but don't get caught up in thinking you need sequential as opposed to batch.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think mega squirt is something I'll look into a little more. I haven't really decided on what I'm going to do in the future, but I'm not going to run a carb forever. But I want control over what goes on. I don't like computers doing too much thinking for me...

dyeager, thanks for the advice on that, but I'm not stuck on any one option. There are pros and cons to every system, I'm just trying to decide which one has more pros than cons for what I want to do.
