Anyone have an aftermarket receiver in their newer GM pickup? I need an install kit for my C5500, which has the same radio opening as my Dad's 04 2500HD. Trying to locate a GOOD install kit. Seen plenty with a useless pocket, or plastic that looks completely different than the dash. Anyone have a head unit in their newer rig?

I don't have one but my brother-in-law does. His 2006 (maybe 2005) had to have a dash kit and a box for the RDS. He now has a 07 duramax and it needs a dash kit, RDS Box, and another box for the Onstar. It's expensive. That's all I know for now as we have not done the latest install. Waiting on parts.

I ordered a wiring harness for the door buzzer issue, just worried about the install kits now. I have the plain jane head unit with cd player, so no RDS. Still has the Class II bus though. So like I said, got the wiring harness and seperate buzzer for that already.

That, is what my dash looks like right now.

He brought the stuff over yesterday. The kit he bought is the crappy one with the useless pocket. He doesn't care. I would take the install kit and use it as a base. Attach it all together and modify it how I would want it. Then experiment with some paint and texture to have it match the existing dash. I had a touchscreen for a computer installed in my dodge at one time. I custom made the center dash piece with fiberglass.

sweet looking setup. What game are you playing there? ha.

I always wanted to do the integrated PC. Whenever I can afford to buy a nice truck I will do it, but that won't be a for a while. Have to focus on the work truck for now.

I think that was a winamp visualization. It was cool for a while. Most of the music I had videos for. Had GPS/Navigation. My next project was voice control but I took it all out.

If the mounting is exactly the same you should be able to use one of these

I got one for my girlfriends z28 with the blue led lighting and is sweet and worth every penny. The can also do custom lettering and fonts so you could do a C5500 in it. There made out of metal and after spending $30 or $40 for one of those fits 50 different make/model kits these are totally worth it.

if you don't like the dash kits then i would suggest make it or have a shop do it, cause most of them go in the same way if you compare the same truck. and if it is around 30.00 or less they are cheap. thats just what i have experienced cause i installed decks for awhile. we used good kits too, scosche and metra mostly

That is a kicka$$ mounting plate. I am in the process of trying one for the K5. Although it has switches for the lights mounted above the unit instead of graphics.:wink1:

On a side note though, what is anyone doing about the cheap little box insert for the cassette deck in the lower part of the console. My '02 had a deck installed when I bought it and the plastic liner box thing has separated so anything small just slides through. Any ideas how to fix that?:dunno:

Cassette deck in the lower console  Do you mean under the heater control in the dash? Plastic liner box thing, are you talking about the factory cubby or is it some aftermarket thing to fill in the space when the factory stuff is removed? If you got a pic that would help, I've had a lot of dashes apart on these trucks.

The factory CD/radio were in the dash above the A/C controls. The cassette part was in the forward piece of the center concole that is in the same plane as the dash. If that makes sense.:doah: The center console looks like it sweeps up into the dash. In the connector piece there is a cubby hole with a door on it for cd jewel case storage. Above that is where the cassette part was. It now has some sort of aftermarket insert that was put in from behind giving another little cubby hole.

I will try to get some pics in the next couple of days. Hope I didn't confuse anybody.:o

Ok, I know what your talking about. Should be a factory piece that fits in there for trucks that didn't have the remote tape player( it's 2002 people, who needs a tape player )
If you could find a lower level truck that didn't have all the options but still had the full console you could swipe that compartment.

I had one installed by the store I bought my stereo from in our 03 Burb. Something about integrated electronics caused us to have to purchase some sort of computer chip so it would still pass emisions. Stupid?

A little stupid , but its easier for the OEM to have the user interface in the stereo for the extra stuff in the vehicle .

Same thing for our Impala , radio is used to reset oil life , turn alarm chirps on/off , etc .

I actually want to find a Colorado radio with MP3 , looks exactly like our 03 Impala radio , only with mp3 , and figure out how to program it for our 03 .

My wife's '95 Monte Carlo was the same way. I put a cd unit in there so everything had to be reset with the light switch and/or brake pedal. Same way on the '05 Impala if we were to change out the radio. The head unit in my '02 2500HD was swapped out. Hasn't been a problem since you just use the brake pedal to reset all the memories for the computer.

Incidentally, I found the felt lined pocket that filled the cassette deck in the console. I got it from a dealership for about $10. I thought that was a good deal for a factory piece.
