Been a long time since ive been around. I had gotten rid of my blazers/trucks etc. Well I just acquired some more in the last couple months. 1974 K20 (350 with vortec heads, TH350 NP205 d44 front 14ff rear), 1975 C20 (350 th350, 14bff), 1989 V2500 Suburban (TBI 350 TH400, NP241 10b front, 14bsf rear), and a 92 K1500 eclb (TBI 350, NV4500, NP241 8.25 IFS/10b rear).

Still trying to decide on the builds. The 74 K20 I plan to build into a mild DD, I originally got for an over landing/off-road build, but thinking I should preserve the body. The C20 im building for my daughter. Im not sure If im keeping the suburban (bigger than what I need). Ive been contemplating building the 92 k1500 for over landing/off-road and doing a SAS since it has a little more space than the standard cab and not as big as the sub. The other option is to DD the 92 and build the 74 and not be concerned with the trail rash when it occurs.

Pics to follow.

Acquired all in trades. The K20 is my favorite to drive, but the C20 isnt on the road yet.

I would bet that the suburban has a 241 case in it with mechanical speedometer. Not that a 208 is a bad case. I agree with Martin, I would build it rather than all of the work to the red truck. The suburban will be easier for everybody to get into with 4 doors.
I like the K20 too.

Yeah I was originally leaning toward the sub also. But then we were looking at the off-road cab overs. We have a trailer now, but want something that can get further up in the trails and small lakes etc. Haven't had a cab-over but the seem like a nice compromise. Could do the rooftop tent, but the cabover would be more comfortable I think.

Well Decision made. 89 suburban build will begin shortly with a twist. Got a great deal on a wrecked 2004 Escalade with the 6.0 LQ9. Still drives, runs great but the frame is bent up front. I have a new th400/NP241 (I checked it is indeed at 241 not 208) but I have been told the 4l65e would be a better option. Im hesitant as im not a fan of the 4l60. Does anyone have experience with the 4l65e?

4l65e is a ok transmission,its just a 4l60 with 5 pinion planetary gears.
I would rather have the th400 personally.
Only flaw in your plan is that lq9 is junk, you should send it to me for proper disposal :waytogo:

The TH400 would work out better for me anyway since the np241 I have wont fit the 4l65e. I found the vss adapter to go from the mechanical to mechanical speedo and have a spot for the computer to get the vss input. Has anyone used them, is there a better brand etc to watch for?

Yeah ill ship that right our:thinking:

If you plan on bigger tires and will have many road miles, the 4L65 would be nice. Gears would help it stay happy while the overdrive would be nice on the highway.I guess rebuild/upgrades and driving style would influence its life as well. I enjoy my v2500 but sometimes wish i had an OD.(350/TH400, 3.73 gears, 295/75/16 Coopers). Of course, the 6.0 should be a game changer.

This sounds like a great plan! We'll be sure to harass, I mean encourage, you for updates to keep you making progress.
Looking forward to it.

Long time no work done, unfortunately. I traded the red truck for a 1999 K3500 CC LB vortec 7400 (was actually my truck years ago and found its way back!). Im using it, at the moment, for a DD and will begin the overland build on that truck while I work on the 74 k20. The 99 only has 132k miles on on it and runs great, although needs some interior door handle replacement- like they all do.

I did end up selling the suburban to a friend (The suv is nice I just like trucks better.)

Im thinking the 74 should get the lq9 sm465/np205 I have but considered the 92 454 as well with fuel injection (proflo, fast efi etc, still researching those options) Not too concerned with towing heavy loads as the K3500 will handle that job, but I sure like the power of the 7.4.

Ill be starting a build thread for the 99 K3500 for overlanding as well as the 74 K20. Ill post links in hear when I get them up.
