nimak5 Build Thread

I bought some 1.75 DOM tubing, so going with that. I'm just waiting to have the money to buy the bender, dies, and notcher. I keep finding deals on other parts and spending my money before having enough for those. What size are you going with and which bender? I'm looking at getting a Model 32 JD2 and 1.75" die, so I'd be willing to share if you have that bender and get a 2" die or want to split the cost of a 1.75" die.

Actually, one of my buddies (icehouse) has a bender, dies, and a nice notcher too that he said I could borrow to build my cage and bumper (he lives only about 30 min away from me and down the street from my parents, so it's nice). I am pretty sure it's the same bender as what you are looking at, but don't quote me, only seen it a couple times. But he has built his front portion of the cage and some shock hoops, and it does bend really well. He only has the 2" die cause that's what he wanted for his rig, so it looks like that will be what I use. I will probably get 2" welded seem though, to keep cost down just a bit. For what I use the rig for, I think DOM is not really necessary (and I am sure that comment will have plenty of people posting up saying if you don't use DOM then you may as well not pull it out of the garage, but I don't care and have done enough research to know what I want). Obviously DOM is by far the strongest, but it about doubles the cost and with the design I have in my head, it will have plenty of bracing and support to be plenty safe

Man I wish I had a connection like that. I'm gonna have to buy one and then I'll sell it for a little less than what I paid for it. I know I'll use it once then it will sit there, so my plan is to sell it after I've finished.

I have a couple of questions.

What were the 14 bolt srw hubs for, are they what's needed to run discs on the dana 70 hd?

Do they change the track width at all?

thanks

They narrow the dana 70HD rear to fit stock H1 wheels. Otherwise, the dana 70hd is a dually axle and the wheel would stick way out with the dually hub, so yes, they change the track width by narrowing it. Hope that clearly answers your questions.

Actually, the 14 bolt hubs would widen the track width.

Check this pic (from a Google search):

The hub on the left is a srw 14 bolt hub and a dana 70hd hub on the right.

Swapping hubs moves the mounting surface of the wheel out to compensates for the 7 inches of backspacing that the stock h1s have.

It's been a while since I did that swap and my brain isn't working today. Thanks for correcting that.

Just a few updates: Began prepping the interior for the cage. Gutted the interior carpet and trim where needed and line-x'ed the rear. Found a lot of rust under the carpet and 3 Georgia license plates covering the rust holes. The passenger side is mostly sandable and will need one hole patched. The drivers side will need a whole new pan. Here are the pics of the progress...

Unfortunately not. I was quick to pull them out when I found out what they were. I just have the picture of the license plates themselves.

Well at least you don't have to worry about putting the first dent in it on the trail.

How did that happen?

Yeah I will definitely roll this truck in the future so I gotta look at it positively. Just hate that it's not pretty anymore... Oh well... Onto the roll cage

That really sucks but at least it didn't hit the top.

Yeah, and if you want, just spend some $ at LMC and get a new fender and hood, then repaint it with a rattle can :thumb:
