no more points!!!!!

I'd come down there and help But I have to work these next 2 weekends and you need your truck

just make sure you pay attention to where the old distributer is and you line the new one up the same. good luck.

I bet there are some youngins in this audience, who have never even heard of such a tool or even the term "dwell". :D

You are quite correct!--I had one kid I know, who I go to when I need help dealing with later model's computer problems,(a whiz on efi and computers)call me up one night and ask me... "Bob,what does DWELL mean??...I've heard of "points",but only saw them in a lawnmower my dad fixed once!..

I explained how us dinosours used to have to set the points with a "Dwellmeter", and how it measures the amount of time the points stay closed so the coil can build up voltage to fire the next plug..

I used to set my points by "ear"....install the points, start the motor, and using an 1/8" allen wrench to adjust them thru the "window" in the distributor cap, turn the wrench clockwise until the engine just starts to "lope" or misfire slightly, then back it out exactly a half a turn--after setting them this way, when I checked with the dwell meter later,I had 28-30 degrees of dwell, which was right on the money..

If installing an HEI seems too difficult for him,I'd say just stick with points..it would be wise to see if the coil he's using has a built in resistor--if not,he can use a mopar ballast resistor in line to the + terminal of the coil to make the points live longer...but the points cost 20-25 bucks now at many stores, they are considered "antique" now!..:eek1: ..God,I'm getting OLD!:doah:

I can but an HEI dizzy with cap, coil and wires from a boneyard for that much or slightly more, and its a fairly easy drop in installation--IF the motor isn't turned over while the distributor is out!--AND all the plug wires get put back on the right plugs!..if your 79 truck HAD HEI originally, you wont have to mess with running a new wire to power the HEI,it should already be there--a thick red or pink wire with a female spade connector on it...

so all i need is 2 line everything up exactly and then the plugs the same way, cou;d i just get a 10 guage wire from the old coil??

yup..

If you get an HEI dizzy, just look at where the rotor is pointing on your points dizzy before you yank it out,and install the HEI one with its rotor pointing the in same place..then put the plug wires on one at a time...the original HEI 12V power wire should already be there on a 79 truck, unless someone cut it off...its a thick red or pink wire with a female spade on it ,that clips into the cap...if yours is missing, rob it off the parts truck you get the HEI from,or run a new one..how to hook it up was already discussed here,no need to repeat it again...

i got a mechanic 2 come out to my house tomarrow, well he is my uncles friend, he is gonna put in my MSD pro billit dizzy, MSD 6a box, and my blaster3 coil!!!! my uncle and him work 4 MSD well my uncle still does. thanks for all the help guys!!:waytogo::waytogo:

wait he didnt come and help:frown1:, but i took the dizzy out and put in my HEI in it took like an hour, well any ways i put it in and put the wires on ran a hot 2 the batt. and i turned the key while my dad turned the HEI and then it STARTED!! i couldnt believe it, it actually started. i drove it around the block and it runs alot stronger!! Many Many thanks 2 you all!!:waytogo::waytogo:

 :tongue1: :ignore:

Your truck originally had an HEI distributor in it. I'll bet you keep eating points because you cannot have more than 9 volts on a points distributor or else points fail very quickly unless of course someone was smart enough to install a ballast resistor or a resistor coil.

I love MSD, every vehicle I own has an MSD product somewhere on it (well except my 2 diesels and my gas superduty)

yeah i found the pink wire it was splined 2 a small wire and i took it off and splined a 10 guage wire 2 the BATT and also ran the carb wire 2 it also. damn po , ha its my uncle!!LOL MSD is awsome but i dunno how 2 wire it so everything is just on my shelf just staring me down till i put it on!!LOL
