NO MORE ROCKROD?!?!

I guess I am glad I got mine when I did. I do have a question will the rock rod on my 10bolt work on a dana 60?....Jason
 
From what i have been told is yes and no. It won't bolt up but it can work. The D60 rockrod is shorter so you cut off the side with the right hand thread to the size you need and take it down to a machine shop and have it retapped. You cut off the side with the right hand thread because it is cheaper and easier to find a shop that will tap it. The left handed tap is more expensive and less places have it so they charge you more to use that tap.

To everyone else - In many states it is illegal to have any part of your steering system welded. Aks me how I know /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif This includes sleeved tie rods. Also, a sleeved tie rod provides no real benefit to just using 1.5 x .25 DOM. There are some that will argue that a sleeved tie rod is stronger, but the fact is there isn't much difference. Also, if you smack your tie rod hard enough to bend it, then it wouldn't have mattered if it was 1.5" DOM or sleeved 1.25" DOM.

Just some things to consider. BTW, I have made several of them, I DID do the engineering to compare sleeved vs. unsleeved and 1.25 DOM vs 1.5 DOM. Unless you're running a hardcore rock crawler you don't need 1.5 DOM. Even only using 1.25 DOM the tie rod is still approx. 2 x's stonger than the stock tie rods. For most of us, the only thing that really justifies the higher cost of the 1.5 DOM is the cool factor and braggin' rights! /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

Ya that no welding crap also applies to alot of frames. I am not gonna worry though.

They make a 1.5" x .375" rod that is thicker than any available that I know of, does not have welded inlets and is not sleeved. They thread them for 7/8"-16 or whatever GM tierod ends are. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
 
my tierod is going to be regular oem japanese made pep boys brand.. er, wait, that what it is and still going strong after a few up close & personal encounters with boulders

Sleeved is not stronger, sleeved is more convenient because you don't have to bore the tube to thread it.
That's why we use DOM tube and thread it directly.
You're right about steering forces and the overkill factor of 1.5" OD tubing. The thing that you have to remember is we're also after bending resistance and even though the stock GM 10 bolt tie rod is entirely adequate for steering forces, it's no good for bending or tying a hydro cylinder to. We carry a 1.25" or 1.125" OD tie rod but we really only sell the 1.5" versions, just because it's more bend resistant.
