No muffler? - EDIT, Muffler Ordered

I was meaning to bring that up. What is the legality in CA? I know you have to have a cat, but if its under a certain noise level, do you need a muffler?

Also, got some tubing and hooked up the tailpipe, it definiltely got quieter still.

Sounds kinda crappy, but better than quiet....and i'm on the lookout for a used flowmaster, or i'll buy one of the reccomended knock off's.

:D:DAnd on a more relevant note, if you are going to get a Flowmaster knock-off, I'd steer away from this brand- Force Automotive. I had this muffler here, and it sounded great, but one of the baffles collapsed about 20 months after I put it on. I had a LOT of backpressure- and it sucked.:D

Aww crap, that's the brand I put on mine when I went to duals:(. I knew it was to good to be true at $20 each:doah:

CA requires a muffler and a cat when they came on the car originally. Noise level has nothing to do with it except you'll get pulled over every 10 minutes if a cop thinks you are missing a muffler.

I'm not sure it makes all that much sense when I see harley's flying down the street with the noisiest mufflers I've ever heard but hey, it's CA...

I have true duals with 3" single chamber flowmasters, and they are THE loudest mufflers I have ever heard. I love it, HOA vice pres across the street from me hates it, but cant do anything about it.

Guess i'll work on getting a muffler back on there ASAP then.

If you want the flowmaster sound without paying that high price look at thrush chambered mufflers. at work we have a book with a cut out view and they are identicle to flowmasters. the part numbers even crossreference to each other so I can get the part numbers if you want them and they are about half the price of a real flowmaster.

How do teh part numbers crossref?

If i need a muffler legally, im gonna order one ASAP.

Thanks!

You might be able to get away without one legally for a while if you stay away from where cops hang out.

I've personally found that uber-loud exhausts are kinda like car alarms that go off for no reason all day. The neighbors eventually develop a sense of vigilante justice and "convince" you to fix the problem. The muffler is easier to fix than some eggs or a brick through the window. :wink1:

I need to have a friend drive it by me or something at WOT, but i really don't think its that loud. Seems to me to be quieter than my blazer with a 50 series on it. Both are tbi motors, so they should be similar besides muffler and pipe legnth

Yea if you have a CAT on it, there might not be a huge difference. Maybe I'm just old now, but I like a good muffler. I'm going to try and "upgrade" my dual 50 series to something quieter pretty soon.

I think you'll be fine with no muffler as long as you still have a cat and stock manifolds. I've ran around with headers, no cats, and a more or less straight exhaust and have never been pulled over for it and lived in the bay area and central cast. Now, if you are doiing something dumb that would get you pulled over in a stock vehicle, then maybe they'll being up the mods. I've pretty much always had some form of illegal exhaust on my 93 Z28, either no mufflers, no cats, or both.

I have the stock Xover to 3" pipe that dumps under the driver seat on my off road only k5. It's quite loud, sounds like crap, I like it. :D Other than that Cherry bomb. Everything is gonna be quiet with the cat on.

Just ordered a Thrush #

$40 shipped from summit, we'll see what happens!

Not to rain on Thunder's Parade but I do believe standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is actually 14.7 PSI. (One of those thing's a jet engine mechanic need's to know) I could be mistaken but I do believe that is correct.
