i have a 700r4 that the case was broke on i had the trans shop swap it in to a new case now i do not have reverse. wtf my buddy pulled it a part and it worked but as soon as i put it in drive no reverse

If the valve body from the case that was cracked was used, maybe THAT had a crack too??..

I have an 85 700R4 in my Suburban that supposedly loses reverse after it gets driven 15+ miles, then returns when it cools off..also wont go into or stay in overdrive..I haven't messed with the truck yet,but I plan to either replace or rebuild the tranny..IF I ever find the cash to put it on the road, before it rots away...I am not liking the fact a used tranny that "might" be good, costs as much as I paid for the truck, and so does registering it..:(..given the poor reputation the 700R4 has,I am tempted to put a TH400 in it instead..but dont feel like having to do all the swapping involved..kinda wish I had found one with a manual tranny now..

The cases were changed in 1987 and the passage cast into the case for reverse is not the same. There is a possibility you have the wrong case for your valve body and internals. Of course there are a lot of other things that could be wrong from misadjusted or broken internal linkage, to a cut lip seal or sealing ring, to a loose bolt or plate on the valve body that covers the reverse circuit.
