im looking at a truck tomorrow. it was running when parked a year or so ago, but now doesnt. the seller says it ran fine before he stopped driving it. so im kinda hoping to drive it home

the first thing i think of is dead batterys. im bringing the charger and a good optima out of the k5 with me

the other thing im thinking is the i/p lost prime. so bleeding the injectors would be on the "try" list

so my questions are,

what would you guys look for or do?
will it start ok without (or with only some)glow plugs in 70 degree weather?

it has been a while since i messed with a 6.2. im reading up in the diesel section to be prepared

i will have more info from the seller in the morning when i talk to him again about why it doesnt start.

Crank speed needs to be as good as possible.

Glow plugs, should have at least 6 working to start OK. A test light can be used to check them. Attach the clip of the light to the positive batt terminal, unplug a glow plug lead and touch the tip of the test light to the spade of the glow plug. If the light goes on you have a good GP (98% of the time anyways). Check these first, if you have at least 5 or 6 working and it doesn't start you have ruled GP's out as the cause.

Cracking injector lines and bleeding out air is another potential 'fix' if it's airlocked and you've tried everything else. Best to remove the GP's so you don't kill the batts or overheat the starter cranking it enough to bleed the air out.

Is this the white Craigslist flatdeck 4WD?

Though I have driven a few trucks home I bought that were only a few miles away,I highly reccomend NOT driving one home after purchasing it!--too many times I had one croak halfway home with a plate I attatched off my own truck, and came close to getting busted when a cop pulled up and asked if I needed assistance--luckily he didn't run my plate, and he just hung by while a friend with a ramp truck came to get me after calling him for me...

I envisioned getting cited for attaching plates and whatever else they could charge me with--it could have easily cost me more than the truck did--and once they impound one,it'll cost you a fortune to get it back!..

One time when I risked driving a truk home I bought, with the former owners plates and registration still valid and current,a local cop stopped me ,and said "lets see the registration"...he sent me on my way once he saw it was still active, but grilled me as to why I was driving it,and if I had the owners permission!...turns out the foemer owner was a known felon who'd spent time in jail up until a few weeks before he sold me his truck..
I played dumb and told the cop I was thinking of buying the truck and was just going for a test drive...he knew the truck, drove by it every day and saw it sitting for months--when he suddenly saw it on the street again,he wasyed no time pulling me over!..

When I got my 82 K2500,Rene helped me figure out how to get it running,I had bought it as a "dead horse" after someone swapped another 6.2 engine in,but gave up on trying to get it started...I ended up taking the fuel lines off at the lift pump and the return line, and using a bleach bottle as a remporary fuel tank with the lines shoved into it,to get the fuel system bled out,and had to hook up the glow plugs to a push button --I still had to use some starting fluid to get it to fire up the first time...
I considered the 50 extra bucks to have it hauled home 55 miles from where I bought iy cheap, considering the nightmare it would have been if I had gotten it to start where it was,and tried driving it home in horrendous summer Cape Cod traffic jams!..

My truck ended up being a mess ,someone hacked the dual tanks switch and wiring and the valve, and had all kinds of cobbed plumbing to the two tanks--I ended up just using one tank, the other one was patched and had leaked...I doubt I'd have made it home had I tried driving it!...

My truck does not want to start without glow plugs even if it's hot outside. In the amount of time it's been sitting I'm sure the IP has lost prime.......I would plan on starting the bleeding instructions from the initial cranking of the engine. I've seen times when you loss prime and cranking it normally just makes things worse as you air lock the injectors.

I would open the bleeder screw and see if there is fuel in the lines, and then at least do the basic bleed job first thing. If the system is dry probably pull the filter and fill it with fuel.

If glow plugs are not working then use starting fluid to get if fired. I always completely unhook the glow plugs before spraying anything in the intake. You don't want to key on only to have 1-2 plugs fire up and explode the ether.

Once you get it running and home make sure to flush and refill the tank as there will be algae growing in it. Had a guy in our club fix up a CUCV that had sat for a year or so, it ran fine through several tanks of fuel and then suddenly stopped running. Found the fuel filter plugged with reddish colored crud that had finally gotten washed off of the tank walls.
