Noise/Backfire/No start

Yeh Im gonna try that tomorrow. Also gonna see if anyone local has a pickup coil for this msd distributor I have, its only ~$25 and you dont have to remove the distributor to replace it on an MSD, just unbolts and the new one bolts on.

definatly sounds like the msd setup is doing it, just got to find out what part is messing you up now.....

by the way nice troubleshooting, i hate trying to find stuff like that.

Welllllllllllllllllll, just got in from replacing the pickup coil. Thing fired up, ran for about 30 secs blowin all kinds of gas smoke out the pipes from yesterdays flooding, then it popped out the throttle body a couple times and cut itself off......ARGH

Welp, I swapped out for a diff computer and a diff chip, no change. Threw in a new set of plugs, now it'll run, just constantly spittin up through the throttle body.

Checked the timing, base is between 4 & 6*'s, and with the EST hooked up, its 40ish* So timing doesnt appear to be retarded.........wonderful, what now?

......focker.......come on down and fix it and I'll buy you some bojangles....then you can take the empty wrappers back to hostinsky to let him lick them.

Alrighty guys, changed the cap & rotor, and bypassed the MSD box, with no change. I checked the spark plug wires with an ohmeter and they check out according to MSD. I just came in from sprayin the wires down with water and starting it while its dark, and there wasnt any visible arching between wires.

Does anyone have a clue? I swear it sounds like 2 crossed plugwires, and I know they arent....HELP!

I wish I could help, I went thru this with a 4.3L S-10. I threw so much money at it, and never really got it right. Feel free to bounce ideas off me though.. I'll tell you what I did and what didn't work..

I miss my little S-dime, but boy did I want to set it ablaze... :)

No matter the topic you always find a way to reference to me and my love for bojangles:p:

noregrets I think you hit the nail on the head. Last night about 8 I had an epiphany, ran out and started it, looked at the fuel pressure gauge and it was frickin pegged.

If the flexplate is cracked up by the crankshaft, you won't be able to see it just by pulling the inspection cover.

I had a van that busted the whole center out of the flexplate one time.

Not sure how this would cause it to spit and sputter but it
might explain the noise. :dunno:

If the engine has been rebuilt and the pistons have been replaced, there is a few things that can cause this, rotating assembly not properly balanced, pistons heavier than stock pistons. This happened to me 2 times on the same engine that I was told hadn't been rebuilt, but I found out differently when I tore it down.

Alrighty boys, last time I posted I thought I had en epiphany, the fuel pressure was peggin the gauge. Ordered a new fuel pressure regulator, got it today and installed it. Shorting the pumps and making them run puts the pressure ~50psi. Start the truck and its pegged again. Now the weird thing is, that it used to pop out the intake at idle.

It no longer pops at idle, just any application of the throttle itll pop.
