Sorry but I need some help on my other car...It is a 99 Mustang GT. I have owned it for a while and it is a car that I am never planning to sell. It is a 5-speed and I am getting a loud "clank" noise whenever I am engaging the clutch(not everytime). I would describe the noise as metal on metal and it only lasts half a second. It has started to happen more frequently. It almost always occurs in first in reverse and then I am usually good. It also happens in fifth gear if I am not pressing on the gas, the car starts to stutter and the clanking happens. It sounds like it is coming right under the shifter maybe near where the motor and tranny meet...I would call it a pop but I am sure it is not a suspension problem but rather a clutch/shifter/or tranny problem...Any ideas guys? A video will be uploaded tomorrow.

The stock shifter tower on the is a POS to say the least, and the stick has been known to pop out of the tower, or your clutch is on its way south.

I only have 30k on the clutch and it feels perfect...I will look into the shift tower a little more because I dont know what that is exactly...I have a short throw shifter in it and it is very tight...Will post a video of the noise and that will give everyone a better understanding of what is going on...God it hurts me to hear it:doah:

With the proximaty of the exhaust on these cars to the trans crossmember I would look for interference due to a weak mount or hanger.

So many possibilities. Broken springs in the clutch disk, transmission problems.......

If its a Ping sound, more than a dull clunk, suspect U-Joint.
You need to jack it up, put it on jack stands instead of just a jack, and grab the driveshaft and twist it back and forth looking for play and noise.
Both in and out of gear.

That big blue emblem up on the front of the grille tends to move around and make a lot of noise during acceleration too, shouldn't be too hard to find, it's circled for ya already... :D

sorry, kind of had to.. :tongue1:

Heres the sounds. It doesnt happen until I backup and go forward again and then it happens each time right when I start to move (although it sometimes happens later while I'm releasing the clutch). It is a snap sound...May be a little hard to hear but I hope this will give you guys a better idea of what's happening

Video

Sorry I could not get it to embed correctly so if you click the video button it will take you to the youtube video. Thanks for the help guys

I think this will embed it for you.

As for the noise, its really hard to say. Does not sound like the classic U-Joint sound, but could be.

Got an idea about how to find it though.

Level parking lot, put the car in park, engine off. Grab a couple of friends to help.
One guy on each end of the car, you stand to the side. The two guys take turns rocking the car forward and back while you listen.

I'm betting you will hear the noise. If so, you should be able to find it unless your friends wear out first.

I am thinking loose suspension part or motor/transmission mount.

If you don't hear it, then you have pretty much eliminated the drivetrain and suspension.
That leaves everything from the parking pawl in the transmission forward.

Most likely suspect in that case, mounting bolts on the flywheel.
But, I think you will hear it when they push the car backward and forward.

Ive had tons of mustangs and my guess is the four bolts on rear end yoke there 12 mm. and if you didnt loctite them they come loose and clunk more like a tink noise. Check that.

bounced the car up and down with no noise...If it will narrow it down, whenever the pop happens, I can feel it in the shifter...it definitely feels like something is banging together...Don't know what, so ill be under the mustang tonight to see whats goin on...:doah: Definitely will check everything else out like you guys said also
