Can I just lube it (with oil or grease and how?),or should I just replace it (new or used)? I have not looked for the price of a new one. I think I have the longer one if that matters.

Can you describe this noise? I think I'm getting the same noise. It's like a spring being twisted and my speedometer will jiggle around, then It will pop and stop jiggling.

mine up to about 40 will go
"weet weet weet weet weet" and jump around when it gets contact with the speedo gear in the tcase cause its all wallered out.

Cable lubes can be found at motorcycle shops. It come with a little clamp that goes on the cable so you don't have to take it out of the housing.

If the speedo is steady and then jumps around after a certain speed, the speedo is usually worn out and needs replacing.

Speedo cables are pretty cheap so I would replace it. However, you still need to lube the new one. So, either way, you are going to have to remove the cable, pull out the inside cable from the housing, lube it, and put it back together. I bought the Kable ease cable lubricant, but many here have suggested either motor oil or lithium grease mixed with motor oil.

Thanks for the response, I think I will try lubing mine first . Can the core be pulled from underneath without removing the whole housing? It is easier than getting to it behind the guages.

I can't remember which end you pull it out of, the TC/tranny end, or the speedo end. You have to unhook the speedo cable housing from the speedo and pull it down low enough so that you can see the end under the dash. I would unhook both ends or you might have trouble feeding the cable back into the back end of the speedo. You should either have a snap on type or a screw on type on the back of your speedo. Mine was the snap on type which meant I had to find a metal tab on the speedo, push it back from the speedo cable housing end, and then pull the cable housing from the speedo. Some of them are a screw on.

Then, unscrew the other end from your transfer case. I think you pull the cable out from the TC end if I recall correctly but it could be the other end. Pull it out of the cable housing. Lay it out on someplace clean that won't get particles all over it when you lube it. Start at one end and lube it up with Kable Ease or oil/lithium grease. Keep it from touching anything if you can and feed it back into your cable housing. Since I had mine out, I threw on some nitrile gloves, put a bunch of lube in my palm, and fed the cable through the lube and into the housing.

Hook it all back up and take it out for a spin. If the speedo needle wobbles, you may have pushed it too far in on the back of the speedo, if you have the snap on kind. That happened to me. I fiddled with the cable on the back of the speedo until it was seated just right and my needle wobble went away. This all assumes of course that when you get the cable out, it isn't kinked or bent anywhere. If it is, dump it and buy a new one.

I have unhooked mine at the t-case and then just squirted wd 40 in it, seems to work fairly well. I did this to one of my trucks and it cured all the noises and the unsteady needle too.

I'd stay away from WD-40 for the speedo. Somewhere in a previous post discussing my previous speedo problem, somebody posted why WD-40 isn't a good idea but off the top of my head, I can't remember why. I think it may have been 4x4High, maybe he can chime in.

Actually I have heard that too but it worked for me, I did it on my tow rig though and it doesn't see alot of miles. So that may be the difference

I think the issue with WD-40 is that if you don't keep it wet, it eventually dries up and turns into a sticky goo. If you throw some in there frequently, it might not be an issue.

WD-40 attracts dirt. It's not really a very good lubricant compared to others, but it does hold up to water decently. (WD=Water displacing)

Don't use graphite either, it actually works as an abrasive, especially in places like the cable.

Nope, wasn't me that said that. I'm not sure why some people want to reinvent the wheel though. There is a product that was made just for this purpose and some people fail to see the need to use it.

Yep, the Kable Ease was easy to come by at the local auto store and was plenty slick. It does make a black slippery mess so throw down some newspaper to work on.
