Helped a buddy change ps pump an pressure line in his 03 Honda Accord with v6 last night. What is the best way to get all that air out of the system, tried letting it run and turning the wheels lock to lock for short amounts of time but still getting whine and foamy fluid.

any power steering system with fluid in it is easy .

wheels off ground . motor off til latter.

fill to full line and cycle wheels 2-3 times .

check and refill and cycle till level dosnt change anymore.

then fire up for 3-5 sec and shut down and re check . add fluid till level stays the same .

then with motor running cycle wheels left / right and make sure no leaks and fluid level is good.

if you fire up with air in system like you did 2 bad things can happen. air and fluid turn in to air shake and take long time to remove air. also most newer style pumps can be trashed real quick if you get massive amounts of air in them. warning cards with lots of replacment pumps these days on this fact.

Thanks. Makes sense about engine running, should have thought of that or read the card. :doah:

One method I recently heard was reccomended on the instructions with a rebuilt pump (but have not tried myself yet) is to leave the engine OFF,fill the power steering pump and any external tank to the full mark--then with the front wheels off the ground, grab a front tire, and pull and push the tire side to side to full lock position several times--then let it sit at least 5 minutes before starting the engine...my friend says he tried doing it a few times, and it worked very well--no growling or whining noises or lumpy steering upon start up...
....................................................I might add, every time I've moved my front wheels side to side with the engine off--the power steering fluid would overflow from the filler cap on the pump, and make a mess...:doah:...

thats exactly what i said other than 5 min wait time in the middle.

and yes a full working system will push fluid out . fords are the worst for this crap.

When I blew a hose trying to run over a rattlesnake and had to drive home about 30 miles with no PS on my old '79 F150, I had a problem with air.
After I replaced the pump and hose, It whined and foamed. I would have put it up on a jack or stands, but we had a couple of work truck down, and needed the space.

I drove down to the local marina and went out in the big parking lot for the civic center.
Bout an acre of pavement with no bumps or parking barriers.
Started making big circles and S turns all over the lot. Turning the wheel from lock to lock.
After about 10 minutes, it gradually quit whining. I straightened up and headed out of the lot.
That was when I noticed three cop cars parked under a tree at the edge of the lot watching me .
Drove over and rolled down my window. Luckily, most of the cops knew me and my truck from things I had done for them in the past.

I looked down at the one in the outside car, and before I could say anything, he asked:
Do I really want to know?
I said, just put on a new power steering pump, had to get the air out.
He looked really sad, and one of the guys in the middle car yelled across, Told you, Pay UP.

The rest of them started digging out their wallets........
