went out mudding a while back and the truck shut off mid hole. turned out that somehow something had put a pinhole in the bottom of my fuel water separator.

so i finally was able to get out and put a new one on and bleed the system.

pulled the pink wire. cracked 2 injectors, one on each side, and cranked till fuel came out of the cracked injectors.

then i tightened everything back up and tried to start it.

no go. didnt even try.

should i have cracked a few more injectors? i didnt pull the GPs because that only makes it crank easier right? it had no problem cranking and i only cranked in short bursts (10 seconds on and a few minutes off)

what do you 6.2 guys think?

I had a crappy fuel filter for a while that would lose prime. Never had to crack any injectors open to get it going though. What are the GP's doing? You could run the block heater for a while to get it nice & toasty. The easier you can make it start the better. ;)

I would crack the line at the rear filter and check for prime there. also try starting with some WD40. check for power to the glow plugs too?

well i have had the block heater plugged in and it was nice and warm. im 99% sure the GPs are working correctly.

where is the "rear filter" that i should check?

should i have cracked more lines than just 2?

thanks

Just crack all of them first before you try spending any money. Which filter do you have? If it's the Standyne "brick" there should be a bleeder valve on the top, crack that one first then down the line the injectors. Did you check the power the the IP pump? It may have blown a fuse. I would also check each GP for voltage as well.

The rear filter is bolted on the back of the air intake. I would replace both filters if you haven't yet. Also fill the filters with diesel before you put them on. Then do a re bleed again.

Pull the glow plugs this time.

For the first 3-4 engine cranks have the pink wire unplugged. You should now have fuel to the injector pump.

Now reconnect the pink wire and crack Every Injector line, crank it until you start seeing fuel at the injectors. Tighten the ones that you start seeing fuel at, do this until they all have fuel and are re tightened.

Reinstall the glow plugs and try starting it. Should start right up, but may require you to hold the gas pedal at half throttle until it starts running.

If this does not work. Start tracing all of the fuel lines and look for leaks. Also look at all the rubber lines for any dry rotting, this could also be where air is getting into the system.

I don't think the 83's had duel filters, only the 82's unless it's been modified.

I've got four 1983 diesels and they all have dual filter setups OEM.

well i tried this exactly and had fuel dripping out of each injector.

and then my batteries decided to crap out on my when i put everything back together. ill put them on the charger tonight and give it a try in the morning. hopefully ill get a start out of her.

thanks guys.

Dead Batteries!!!:eek1::eek1:

Welcome to the world of starting problems with a Diesel:haha::haha:

Don't worry, it's a BIG club!

Might as well check the glow plugs with an Ohm meter:p:

My 82 has dual filters too. Both are screw ons. Gota love my diesel.

When you guys are talking about dual filters, are you counting the fuel/ water separator thats on the passenger side firewall?
