I’m restoring a 1975 GMC Jimmy and when I’m done cleaning up the front and rear axles I’d like to replace the plain diff covers with some cast aluminum covers or at least some better looking stamped covers. From research on here it looks as though I have a Dana 44 front and a 12 bolt rear axle, does that sound right(if they are the stock/factory axles)? If that is the case, will ANY Dana 44 and 12 bolt covers fit or are GM covers specific? I’m seeing a lot of nice covers but most say they are for Jeeps. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Pretty much any diff covers fit. If you have doubts, post up.
We have alot of room for steering and diff cover clearance. What you need to look for is the fins or whatever on the front 44 cover to be flat for tie rod clearance. Usually a pretty good indicator.

You might be careful on the Dana 44, newer Jeeps have "Dana 44's" that don't share any parts with the older stuff. Wouldn't surprise me if the diff covers were different too.

I found this an interesting video, that most of us probably don't consider at all:

Trying to sell stuff, but follows the same theory as engine oil control. Probably not a big deal for most out there, but still, something to think about.

We watched all the videos leading up to the introduction of their new cover.
Personally I always keep the original.
Never felt the need to upgrade.
Maybe a brace on once to protect the lips and the ring gear.

Jk 44 covers do fit older axles, just too many variables in manufacturers to say they all clear the tie rod.

The only Dana 44 cover that shouldn't fit would be from a new Jeep JL/JT. They're a different housing casting from the old Dana 44 and have a different bolt pattern and cover. Like @obijuank5 said though clearance with the tie rod might be an issue but you should be fine.

Rear axle is 12 bolt specific. Other 12 bolt covers won't work. I'd look for something specific for that axle.

Thanks for the replies! I’m trying to find matching covers for front and rear (same brand and finish) and I’m not having any luck.

To match with the 12 bolt you won't have much luck. Back in the day Hickey had matching finned cast aluminum covers for both the 44 and 12 bolt. Good luck finding any because they are like gold now.

DIY4X has D44 covers....HD stuff!
The rear needs to be the truck 12b not the car 12b!
