So I get that changing the stock rear shackles impart lift by increasing the distance between the frame and the springs.
I am confused about the DIY kits, if you only cut off the one rear shackle mount and install a new longer one, but leaving the stock shackle on the same spring on the other end how do you get a lift? Perhaps someone could explain?

I think I understand what you're saying (maybe?). Well I bought my shackle flip from DIY4X and the way it works is basically, one end of the spring is relocated abour 8 or so inches lower by flipping the shackle than it's stock position, raising the truck about 4 inches (unless you use longer shackles, then you'll raise it more).

O.k. So why dose only ajdusting the position of one shackle impart lift?
Thanks for answering
cheers
Matt

there is only a shackle on the rear of the spring. what you are referring to is the hangers. in a stock setup the front hanger holds the spring and the rear hanger hold the shackle. the shackle and spring end are above the bottom of the frame. when you install a shackle flip it moves the end of the spring down below the frame. For every inch that one end goes down the center of the spring travels half the distance. so if you move the end of the spring down 8" you will achieve 4" of lift at the axle.

take the desk you are sitting at. lift one side of it up and shove some books under it. the center went up half the distance of the end you raised.

Ahh, I've got your confusion. You are not changing the position of the shackle so much as the angle. Instead of pointing up from the stock bracket, the shackle flip spins it 180* so that it points down.

correct. instead of it being like this...

it looks like this. but the angle of hte shackle will change with the weight on it, location of hte hanger, spring lenth, shackle length etc.

Here's what the off road design shackle flip looks like with DIY4x 7" long shackles

You can see how far the rear of the spring has moved down compared to your stock setup

Thanks That was exactly my confusion! I did not understand the basis behind it. good explination and pictures
