Just bought a 1990 K5 with 350 Crate, 700r Trans, 5" Sus Lift, 1" Body, Headers, lockers, and 35" swampers.

A week ago my radiator took a dump and had to get it replaced. Upon leaving the shop, the truck wouldn't shift, low on trans fluid.

2 days later, the truck is pissing out trans fluid by the transfer case. I get all the seals in it (3 i think) replaced.

2 days from there the trans wont shift from 2nd to 3rd unless I ease off the throttle. BUT going home the trans loses 3rd completely, sometimes the entire trans goes out and I sit for a second, then it works again.

While at my mechanics shop sitting on a decline the truck wouldn't even shift into reverse but when we pushed it back to solid ground, it ran fine. Notice the trans fluid was about a quart too much. I have towed to shop in hometown. They bleed out 1 quart and drive it, no third, even after playing with TV cable. But then when I drive it home to let it rot, it shifts perfectly fine.

Unfortunately, the heater core decides it wants to piss all over the passenger floor. Looks like that is out now.

So is the trans truly shot?!? I just dont understand how it goes from working completely fine on second to nothing the next, then back to fine.

I'm in grad school and need to drive 30 miles to work each day. This blazer has made my life hell! haha

Couple things, first drop the trans pan and make sure the filter isn't clogged or fell off. If that is all good and the fluid is nice a nice color and smell then i would say the sunshell may have broke (common problem with the 700). The TV cable isn't something that you want to "play" with, it is either set or it isn't. The TV cable not being set correctly will kill a 700 in short order.

You said you replaced some seals in the t-case, did you replace the inoput seal? When this seal goes bad trans fluid will enter into the t-case making it overfull and the trans low on fluid. When the t-case becomes overfull it will start to either leak out of the front and rear output seals or out the breather vent.

Thanks Scott.
I've been extremely busy with work and school so I had the local shop change my seals.

I'm not familiar with transfer cases as all my cars/truck have been 2wd. They rear seal was leaking but they said all the seals were shot so I replaced them all.

I assume if the trans filter came off, it would suck in air and the trans wouldnt work at all? And it (the trans) seems to work less as the truck is driven more and warmer. (the opposite of a clogged filter).

I noticed that the t-case did leak a little after they replaced the seals.

What exactly is the 'sunshell'. never heard of such a term.
