Awesome!

Welcome to the board Michael.

" but this thing would be so easy to do a quick frame off... "
This sounds like a fun slippery slope of the "Might As Wells" :waytogo:

Looking forward to the fun father-son build.

Suggestion.... DO NOT PAINT IT!!!!!!!!!!

That truck has a great look and patina to it that you just can not fake.

Make it mechanically safe and reliable 100%
Drop it to the ground and run those steel wheels with wide whites all tucked up into the wheel openings.
Clean up/repaint/reupholster the interior, make it mint, cause no high school girl will want a ride in that sty.
Some dual pipes and glass packs and rock the S**T outta that ride!

If you resto the body work on that it'll lose that work hardened, rough around the edges look. Plus you'll then have to worry about everything that could ding or dent it. It'll be more fun and less worry in it's current body condition (read: user friendly), perfect for a HS kid.

Since I'm in the habit of Chop-slamming everyone's rigs... :haha:

:sign17: 100% with 496truck.

The kid probably already has plans spooling up in his mind already. So my advice... whatever those plans are... make sure they're reasonable enough goals to complete before you graduate highschool! Avoid the 'Might As Well' pitfalls at all costs! Enjoy that truck as much as you can in this stage of your life. -Especially since your cool Dad is still around to work on it and enjoy it with you. Once college hits, life starts to get away from you fast. Trust me. You'll be in your 30s with a wife and mortgage before you know it.

I totally agree with getting the interior spruced up nice. Keep it simple, true to form and clean. Right down to the stereo system. Girls love vintage stuff. :pimp: Cool girls do anyway. There's something nostalgic about old school stuff that just can't be replaced by new fangled doohickies. High tech doesn't belong on a truck like that... unless its safety/handling stuff. (brakes, suspension, seat belts).

Do your suspension work if funds allow right away, but absolutely get those whitewall tires the way you want them first thing! Wheels and tires totally set the look of any vehicle. Then make other progress as weekends/money allow. Don't let the truck go out-of-commission more than a few weeks at a time, if you can help it. Plenty of time to do long-term Might-As-Well projects when you're a working-stiff and need a weekend hobby. When you're in highschool, you need to be driving that truck every day! :sign14:

:D

Yea man....

If you have a real budget (not a fly-by-the-seat-of-yer-pants budget, like mine),
The goals, IMO, should be Drivetrain>Exhaust>Steering>Suspension>Creature Comforts.

I, however, am driven by affordability... And, crazyness. :haha:

Notice how I left out paint....
I'd wet sand with 1000 grit, or steel wool, and wax it, or flat clear it.

Look to Portertbilt for killer low air ride and suspension stuff.

That stuff is crazy money. It all looks great, but still crazy money. Glad the garage was built up with a lot of fab tools during the Blazer build. :pimp:

Built not Bought....Correct? :wink1:

Suggestion.... DO NOT PAINT IT!!!!!!!!!!

That was my original thought as well. A little "Gas Monkey", with the slam and a little clear right over the patina.

Thing is, the patina may look great to us older guys, but not so much to a HS kid. I know, I know, I've told him how cool it is, just don't think that he is going to buy it. To him, it looks old and rusty, not clean and flashy, so to speak. He has looked at a ton of pics and really likes the flat black look, or a deep electric blue.

Kinda diggin' the flat, with a little pin stripping and some ubber white walls my self.

Really it will be up to him. It's not going to be anything super flashy, due to his cash flow.....Which is my cash flow... and I'd like to drive mine someday too. :thumb:

Pretty cool that he is signed up and will hopefully starts to post some of his thoughts too. Maybe he will chime in tonight with his thoughts.

Since I'm in the habit of Chop-slamming everyone's rigs... :haha:

That is so damn cool like that. Nice Job Mike!!

That will be the order, but the CDO in me will need to have this thing clean, bottom to top, front to back. :doah:

Thank you guys for all the compliments and the ideas. I'm pretty straight forward on how I want this truck. Like my dad said the rust isn't my style. The flat black really clicked and the electric blue. I don't know which one yet. What do you guys think would look the best? But the tires are already decided. White walls all the way! Lol

Yeah, you'll notice I didn't recommend buying that stuff...at one point I was gonna big block swap my 83 C1500, air ride so it'd lay frame and wide whites...so I did spend some time researching it. fullsizechevy.com has a ton of lowered stuff of every generation. They also have a wide variety of vendors for ideas, and many many DIY build threads on air ride stuff if you're into fabbing rather than buying (as you clearly are!)

Welcome to our insanity Michael!! Really dig your new ride.

My opinion if you're not into the "patina" look. Flat color other than black. I've seen baby blues and cream yellow in flat on the old iron and it looks deadly. Either that, or original colors letting the stance and tires do the talking. Newer flashy colors somehow don't look as great on the classic Chevy pick-ups IMHO.

Another option (possibly) is to plasti-dip over the original patina. Got a ton of colors to choose from, it's not that spendy, can be done at home and if you change your mind it peels off.

As for wide whites...there are a couple of ways to go depending on budget. They have porta-walls which is a removable sidewall installed when the tire is mounted. Not sure on cost.

The common method I've seen is grinder/sander to reveal all the white rubber. Commonly white wall tires that show maybe a 1" white wall really have up to 3" of white rubber under the black surface. This varies from tire to tire, so it's really best to stick to four of one brand if you're gonna go that way.

Oh snap! It's official!
Father and son screen names... :haha:

<---- If y'all need some pinstripes.... You know who does em. :deal:
And, remember.... Pinstripes can be ANY color...

I have been thinking and I agree with what your saying. I'm pretty sure I will go with the same green that is on the truck now. It fits it really well.

There is a particular paint code for that off-white/ivory interior color...it may not look like much at the moment, but in new shape it's pretty cool looking. Yours may clean up decently with some elbow grease and mild detergent.

Speaking of which, the first and best step is a massive all day clean on that. It'll look better, and give you a much better idea what you're working with. Dirt/grime hides the good and the bad.

Overall, a great deal on an awesome first rig. :waytogo:

A lot of elbow grease at that!!! I'll post pictures of it when I get it all cleaned up. Thanks!!

Is it home yet?

I got my first car at your age, but my Dad wasn't really mechanical. Your Dad on the other hand should be a big help for you.

No matter what, you'll learn a ton, have fun and end up with a cool ride. You better post pics....I don't know if you klnow the rules here, but if you're doing something cool its "pics or ban" :flipoff7:

No pressure though. :haha:

No it's not home yet, it should be home within a week or so. Yeah without him I would be driving something a lot less cooler than what I have now lol. Ohhhhhh I know that! Heard about a million times in Canada! Lol

Well, you above the rest of us should have a pretty good feel for the build your Dad has going. Couldn't ask for a better teacher/role model etc.

I bet you can't wait til it's home! Better than Christmas... :pimp:

Yeah I couldn't do any of this stuff without him. Good father and son time, and WAY better than Christmas! Lol!! :D

In the end, it's your truck, do what YOU want. If you must paint it (most of us will die a little inside :doah:) then try and stick with the factory mint green with white 2 tone or something like that. I also like the plasti-dip idea as it is removeable if you don't like it or want a color change.
