I aquired a pair of 73-80 NOS GM fenders still with the stickers and inside the box. The are painted black.

Did GM first paint the fenders black then paint over them with the truck color? Also what rust preventative should I use with them? I need to get them painted then and transfer over the emblems.

All OE sheet metal is either black or gray, it's basically primer.

it's EDP coating.... as mentioned, it's a primer...

I've heard different trains of thought on this.. i've heard of failures when left on, but never seen them myself.... i must have installed/primed 1000 EDP coated panels in the collision shop... all we ever did was run a DA over em with some 180ish, as long as it sands, sticks, feathers right, we'd just prime over it... never had a failure...

so its new, but old? like an old fender that never got used?
Bingo.

Original, new but old, never used OEM parts.

The term is sometimes used with old aftermarket parts too.

We left it on a set of new bedsides, and there must have been moisture underneath from what the body shop said because rust popped through in 6 months. I'd do what ryoken says. He's the man

just to clarify my position a little.... that's what we did at the bodyshop, on my personal stuff I'd more than likely strip it off (easy enough) and zinc and hi-build it... piece of mind and all that, but as most know, i tend to be that way... :doah: :haha:

I just wanted my bodyshop experience with it to be known..... it was definitely more profitable for us to leave it on...

would would be the cost to get the fenders prepared with rust protection and painted? the fenders have no scratches or dents. fresh from GM boxes.

been yrs since I worked in the bodyshop, but I'm betting it'd be about $500 for the pair, depending on primer/paint used..

wow! That is way more then what I paid for them. I have an air compressor. Maybe I may just try painting this myself
