How hard do you think it is to replace a tranny in an 89 honda civic and knowing nothing about hondas? Any places to even find a transmission? Manual trans btw. Once again I'm reminded on how great it is to have a chevy where parts are cheap and easy to replace.:D

it is a piece of cake, trans out the bottom. I did one in a civic in about 2 hrs, out and in. But i have done a few of them. unbolt everything just like a normal clutch job, pop the axles out, and iirc, pull the strut rod off on that side. shouldn't be any major deal.

Sweet thats more of what I wanna hear :D

yeah Jasons right ,its pretty simple. easier than a 4x4 truck. just because its a honda doesnt mean its impossible to work on.

one more thing, when you undo the shifter bar, undo the bolt on the shifter, iirc, the bar doesn't actually come off the trans side, you should be able to see what i'm talking about when you get under it.

yeah its about 2hours. not bad. just use a 1/4inch bolt to knock out the rollpin in the shift linkage after pulling back the rubber boot, and the metal clip going around the linkage universal.

I have done a clutch on that car in under an hour. If you have access to a lift, it is so easy. You can remove and reinstall the trans by yourself. Pull the 10mm bolt out of the speedo drive gear housing and leave the unit in the car. Spray the area where the axles come through the hubs with PB Blaster or something a day before you start. The axles are sometimes hard to get out of the knuckles. IIRC 32mm axle nut. 17mm trans bolts, mabey 14mm on the 89.
IF you have any specific questions, ask away, I have been working for Honda for the last 17 years.

they have pleny of books about these specific things at book stores about how to do everything to a honda civic. mind you most is about engine swaps, but they also have transmission swaps. hondas are just about the easiest imports to work on, they provide ample amount of space in the engine bays, almost all honda parts (like most chevys) are interchangeable, and with all the detailed instruction manuals. its a piece of cake.

being the owner of a honda element. which has almost no aftermarket support, the forums show you that all you need is a header, supercharger, and everything else from different cars to make it go fast. this summer im going to convert it to a 6-speed transmission on $185 :eek1: .

Agreed with most said above replies. The hardest part will be the disc and pressure plate lined up to the input shaft, while putting the trans back in.
