Not starting? Flooding/timing?

Well, took the blazer out tonight. I got the E-choke hooked up yesterday, so it fired up real nice this evening. We drove for maybe 10 minutes, then it died while idling at a stoplight. it hadnt been idling well, and been putting out a bit of black smoke from the exhaust. Too rich? We started it back up again, drove another 3 minutes, died again./ this time it wouldn't start at all. Let it set for a bit then a nice powerstroke came and jumped me off, had just enough juice to start her. ( for like 3 seconds) Then it died again, and we towed it home.

Could it be some combination of flooding, timing, and the A/F mixture?

(btw it's a 78 K5, 350 w/ a holley carb)

Sounds like your choke isn't opening fully. Would it not start because the battery was dead from trying to start it, or is that another problem entirely?

nah the battery was cranking fine, the engine just wouldnt fire..hmm

If I were you, I'd pop the air cleaner off the cold engine (as in hasn't been run for quite a few hours) manually operate the choke to see what "full open" looks like, then kick the throttle, check the choke to make sure it's shut as it should be, start the truck, and watch the choke to see if it opens as fully as you can manually. If it doesn't, probably a linkage adjustment, although I have no experience with anything other than Q-jets.
