Not Starting!!!!!!!GDI

My 79 k5 wont start it just makes a grinding noise when i try to start it-its not the starter i just replaced it sounds like something else. 350/350 Any ideas ?

grinding noise /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif...have you pulled your inspection plate to verify your not eating the teeth off your flywheel?

Yeah i have no cover on my flywheel so i can see it pretty clearly. There are some shiny spots where i can see the starter has made contact but they dont look worn or broken!

and your sure that your starter is engageing properly. if the soilonoid (sp?) is not pushing the starting gear far enough it would just sit there and grind on the edge. did this just start on day or are you in the process of replacing starters?

last week when it was cold i tried to start it and the teeth on the starter broke shattered blew up. i replaced the starter and now this happens? dunno

i would first look at the spacing on the starter base. maybe the new starter needs shims were as the old didn't. i had this circumstance occur on another car. you can get a shim kit and try to correct this. or...you can take the starter back and find a different manufacturer to see if it will fit better.
