now what?

Alright im trying to replace the axle in my dana 44. I have everything off except for the spindle. i have been beating the area where the studs are for about 1hour with a hammer and its not freaking moving at all. hmmm I tried putting a screw driver in between where the spindle and knuckle connect, i've only gotten it to move a lil bit. any tips?

there is a special 4wd tool you can get at most auto stores...i would reccomoend getting a combo one, made for 1/2-1 ton axles...it will save you money if you go to a 14bff or d60. it looks like a overgrown socket with little teeth on the end.

if he is talking about the spindle itself like it sounds like, there are just a few nuts, undo those and tap the spindle with a rubber mallet, side to side, and pull.

spray some penetrating lube on it and let it sit for a while. then go beat it with a "rubber" mallet....if you can, put a flat head between it and the knuckle and pry it off...

yeah have fun,, haha. I usually drive the spindle studs out the other side of the knuckle(give each a quick whack on the tip with a block of wood and a hammer). However I can't remember if you need to remove the knuckle to reinstall them afterwards. Been a long time since I messed with a 44.

take a 4-5 lb dead blow hammer to the area inbetween the bearing seats. some work it will come loose. if it comes out just a bit slide a chisle in the gap and hit oposit side to help pop it out. good luck.

I sually just take a rubber mallet and hit the part right next to the threads a few times. Then grab it with 2 hands and just start shaking it(haha ) until it starts to come off.

They have a spindle attatchment for a slide hammer, it would take all of 20 seconds to get it off that way..
It looks like this and has a multi threaded opening.
