I've got a 203 transfer case in my blazer now, but I'm not happy with all time 4-wheel. I've been looking into other options a little, but I'd like to know what my friends here at CK5 think?

I've got a 84 K5, 350is/440hp/450fpt, no lift, stock axles...I think.(Havn't opened that bag. Started with the engine)

Thanks,

Daniel

So somebody at some point swapped in a 203 into your '84?

Certain trannies and T-cases were commonly found with each other. What I'm saying is depending on which tranny you know have, which tranny you might ultimately want might help make the decision for you.

As you haven't said, I'm guessing at some point the stock 700R-4 packed it in, and rather than spend the cash for a rebuild (cuz they can be a bit spendy) someone swapped in a TH350/NP203 combo.

I you want to have an OD auto then I'd look into a 700R-4/NP208 as they're very common. Much better low range, less weight and part time of course...and you'd regain OD.

Option 2, is find a NP205 with a 27 spline input and TH350 adaptor and bolt it up. Stronger and more compact T-case and it's part time.

Option 3 is a 4 speed swap with a pretty common SM 465/NP205 combo.

All depends on your wants, and that sort of starts with the tranny options out there.

What is it about the 203 you don't like? I have never had bad luck with 203's. Lot of guys bitch and complain about them, but that's only because they want a 205 for the "cool" factor.

203 are a great strong t-case they are just heavier than hell. If you like the all time 4 wheel then they where ahead of there time and are still pretty cool. I dont belive it was designed to be a part time case so when converted it has some minor oiling problems and after long trips in 2d the chain will strech an make some noise. And fuel ecomeny sucks with a 203. I dont have anything against 203 and they are very stout cases but for a parttime case the 205 is better and is just as strong if not stroghter than a 203. I did manage to break the larger chain i thin in is 2.5 inchs wide and the guys at bayshore had never seen that before.

I broke my chain on the 203 as well, it took out my case too because the chain gathered at the bottom in layers and wedged against the case and BOOM, I had a 3" hole in my case.
I still think it's one of the best full time cases.
I still have it in my chalet.

The trany is a TH400. I haven't had any problems with, or heard anything bad (other than gas mileage) about the 203, don't get me wrong. I'm just looking for something strong with part-time. I'd like to build this blazer for hunting-fishing/Moab/drive to work or around town from time to time. I know I'm asking alot, but who (that isn't looking for sponsor's) doesn't want that set up. My last blazer was built for Pismo Beach, because I lived near there. But I had to sell it to keep the Fam fed while I ran all over the lower 50 chasing oil/gas work. Now I'm in Grand Junction, CO and looking to stay. So I'm after a whole new build that is appropriate for the area and my application, and that isn't going to break the bank(of course). You know the deal.

Thank you for the help fellas'.

There is the Offroad Design Doubler that I'm thinking about, but I still wanted to hear from other people's experience.

with the th400 your going to need a 205 hat was mated to one. I am currenty trying to build a doubler and usually the hard part is finding a th400 205. For your applicaton just a 205 would probally just be fine. A doubler would be over kill but who doesnt like over kill :). If you switch to a 205 or a doubler setup you will hav to leghten or shorten your driveshafts.ord has a pretty sweet setup

Good deal. Being right down the road from them makes that an easy fix. Plus I have a 205 on the hook. The guy is asking $300 for a th400/205 combo. I told him I didn't need the tranny, what did he want for the 205, and he said make an offer... so I said $50... Kinda "dirt-bag-ish" I know, but can you blame me. What do you think its worth?

A 32 spline input 205 is worth usually between 200.00-300.00 depending on location. If I were you I would pay the 300.00 he wants for the combo then either keep the 400 for a spare or sell it off and recoup most of your money. The adapter alone can easily fetch 200.00.

yea i agree ever since the doubler became popular the th400 205 jumped in price. If you want o try and bargin offer 200 for the wholething but honestly 300 ant bad at all for te entire setup

I would just buy the whole set up for 300$. Then you can have a spare 400 or sell it. You can also twin stick the 205. I have a 400/205 sitting in my shop all fresh and ready to put in. Cant wait.

Went to give the guy the $ and he'd sold it! Can't blame him. So, should I give the 203 another winter to think about, or go to something else?

hello my th400 203/205 combo works greats , no complaints well a lomax 205 would be even better :)
