Looking at the vent plug up on the top of the case. The vent plug has a pin hole in it for the venting. Wanted to make sure it was venting as normal…. So I stuck a paper clip inside of the vent hole. The paper clip only went down about a fraction of an inch. Shouldn’t I be able to push it through all the way down? Seems like the vent thing is clogged up with crap… any ideas?

im almost positive those r just pressed in and or glued in.so pull it off and check it out,it might have a screen or something to keep oil from oil coming out/crap getting in? i could be wrong but just a thought

Yes, maybe it just pops out. Once I get it out I could really check it. Anyone else?

Just grasp it with pliers and tug/pull to get it out then tap the hole for 1/8" NPT and thread an NPT fitting in there with either a 1/4" barb or a 5/16" barb on the opposite end and never look back.

It's probably baffled so that oil can't easily travel up the breather hose.

Just about every breather is baffled in some way

Stick a clean piece of hose on it, clamp it, and blow in the other end. If you can blow through it, it should be fine.

Of course if you are worried about what might be in there that might get blown into the transfer case, you can always suck on it......

Whatever might be in there is bound to do you less damage than the transfer case........

They are pressed in, no threads or glue. The hole is very small, about 1/16" and it is always plugged with rust and old oil. The nipple is straight through, no baffle. The oil dam is cast into the tailhousing. I tap the hole and use a brass barb like 4X4HIGH posted. Use a small hammer to hit it side to side and it comes right out.

Greenie, thanks. I hooked up a hose and I tried to blow compressed air through .... no luck. the thing is full of rust. I guess I will knock it off and then clean it. How do I get it back on when finished. The case is on the truck and I'm not taking off the truck because I have no clue how to.

I guess what I meant ... is it possible to hammer back in that piece once I remove and clean?

See below... yep rusted solid. Cant jam anything in there to free it up. I guess I will tap the hole and put a new fitting in there.
The case made a suction sound as well when the thing can off… hasn’t been venting at all….

Put grease on the tap so the metal shaving stick to it. The hole is the right diameter and it doesnt take much to tap the threads into it.

I found some real small drill bits. So I drilled the thing out and got all the rust out of it. Then went back with a slightly larger drill bit and enlarged the hole a tiny bit. Tapped it back in and put some hi temp RTV around the bottom. Hook the hose up and now she breaths again!

Probably for the first time in 20 years.... Now I know why the damn case has always leaked so matter what I did….too much pressure..... should be better now it can vent a little.

I know. As soon as I typed that, I thought "This will not end well......"

Kinda like this.

Try reloading it.

I had several pics with real similar names, and posted the wrong one, twice. As soon as I did, I would do an edit and delete the pic. and then post another one.
I suspect you clicked on it between pics.

Finally got the right one up.
