I have a 1972 GMC Jimmy with an NP 205 transfer case and 350 auto transmission. The transmission leaks into the transfer case. I would like to rebuild the transfer case and replace the tailshaft seal.

Can this be done with regular hand tools (I do have a 20 ton press)

Is there any specific info I need for parts?

Where can I get a rebuild kit?

Is there an additional seal I can install on the TC to prevent fluid entering (thought I read that somewhere)?

What color should I paint the transfer case?

Thanks
Mark

Do a search on np205 rebuild kits on google ull find tons of info plus complete breakdowns on them. as i remember all u need is basic hand tools and a press. u might need a puller but dont remember.

You actually need to replace the tranny rear seal. I don't remember if the 205 has a seal on it?

I rebuilt my 205 with basic hand tools, but you'll want a good large pair of snap ring pliers.

If it's just leaking a little, you probably don't even need to totally rebuild it. Just replace the gaskets out the output housings and covers if they are leaking.

I thought I read somewhere you could add a seal on the input side?

The rebuild kits seem about $200 so to have it all rebuilt for another 30+ years it would be worth it to me. (I may just get the parts and do it next winter).

I think the seal is on the tranny adaptor and not actually on the transfer case. So you just have to remove the transfer case.

Actually it is only leaking a small amount. The transmission is leaking into the transfer case so since I have to take the transfer case out to do the transmission tail shaft seal I may as well freshen up the transfer case?

yes the seal is on the tranny to tcase adapter. It is an oring seal that goes around the sleave.
As a cheap fix is it possible to... run the tcase with the same tranny fluid as in the tranny. Not the OEM fluid for the NP205. The np205 I picked up had been run with tranny fluid with no problems. Besides fixing a NP205 is much easier then fixing a tranny. just my 2 cents.

Yea, that might work for a while, but when mine did it, the transfer case started overflowing out of the speedo cable gear and a few other spots. So I was pouring it in the tranny and it was just leaking onto the ground a little farther back instead. :)

What I am trying to eliminate!
