np 205 input shaft swap

how hard is it to replace the input shaft on a np205, my splines are shot and i have the replacement shaft in hand and have found some instructions.

basically what i have found says to pull the front output shaft then the input and replace in reverse order, is that correct?

about how long will this take with hand tools the first time one does it?

Watch out for all the little bearing rollers that will fall out. Make sure you know exactly how it goes back together before taking it apart.

I did mine and it wasn't too bad. I'd expect it to take 2 easy days making sure everything is super clean as you reassemble it.

In order to remove the input shaft you must remove the rear output shaft. Be carefull of the needle bearings as others have said. Once the rear output shaft is removed you need to remove the clip from the input bearing then you can remove the input gear from the rear of the case. You'll need to swap over the gear on the shaft then the reverse to re-assemble.

is there an orientation that i can work on the case in that limits the likelihood of loosing needle bearings?

my chiltons and haines manuel's should be able to walk me through this right? (I ask because they are in the back seat of the blazer at a friends- i have no garage this year)

would it be feasible for me to do this and put my tranny back in in one weekend, first time doing either of course, but i do have air tools

There are two different styles of rear bearings. There is a caged needle bearing and then there is the non caged needle bearing. If it has the caged bearing then it is super easy, if it has the non caged bearing then needles will most likely drop and you'll have to grease them into place. It only takes me about 5 minutes to swap input shafts.

I assume you are pulling the transmission because the splines on that are fubar'd too....If not you don't need to pull the tranny to swap the t-case input. You can support it and just remove the t-case. If you have the ability to swap an output shaft in a TH400, then swapping the input shaft in the 205 should be cake.

yea the trans output was fuuucked, so its out being replaced at the shop that built it, nice guys, they are hooking me up for free, i just had to pay shipping to WA and back, but still if i had taken it somewhere here I would have probly been taken, from behind that is.

cool, so i will be replacing the 205 shaft this weekend, and if my trans could get back here i will do that too, but its looking like that will be next weekend.

o well whats one more week without a car?
