Anyone ever swap a 32 front output into a synchro 205? I was told all you need is the shift fork, collar, and rear cover from a non synchro. I started a rebuild on my donor truck 205, 85k3500, and found out it is a synchro case.

I have done it before, and if I remember correctly the gears are different as well (could be wrong, been a long time). I can't remember if the shafts are the same diameter or not. I think the shift rails are different also. The shift fork is indexed differently on the two cases. I can look at my parts pile tomorrow and see what I have left over from the synchro case. If you would be interested in getting rid of the rear synchro cover send me a pm.

Thanks for the input t89blazer. Will let you know on that rear cover as soon as I figure out what to do.

I know this thread has nothing to do with tape decks, post lift vibrations, or what oil filter to use. But damn, thought I could more than 1 reply.

I have build my whole jimmy using the "search" option. (just cant find the answer this time)

How do you know if you have a syncro 205? I know what syncro means but what made it different from the non syncro? could you shift into 4x4 on the fly?

Your GM synchro 205 rear covers center will be solid with an oil vein in it. A non will have the back of the bearing in the center, no oil vein.

Yes, it was supposed to be shift on the fly.(but did'nt work very well.)

i just realized my np205 is a sync'd unit, i didn't realize there was such a thing...the OP asked about a 32 spline front output...my t-case has the aluminum tailshaft & i've bought a 32 spline sye for it...its the shorter shaft out of an older np205, i also got the bearing retainer & yoke...will this work in my sync'd np205?

yes i know that now...i think you/sweetk30 are the one who schooled me on that in another thread, also iirc, i bought either the sye shaft & retainer or the yoke from you..i still haven't gotten around to putting the stuff on, the needle bearings have me intimidated...many thanks!

edit: it was in the thread you linked that you pointed out that ''teardrop''..lol

Dont let the needle bearings intimidate you. They are really easy to put back together. Just make sure you have all of them and use wheel bearing grease to hold them in place and you are good to go. I am only 18 and i swapped outputs on my 205 and it was really easy. Just take your time and do it right and it will work out.

think 1 set is bad try reman of 203 range box and reman of 205 tcase. thats a lot of needle bearings .

the 203 rangebox lower pin has 3 sets in the lower gear cluster.

go look in the tech section for my big write up on 4l80-203-205 doubler. lots of pics and step by step. might help you with the sye swap.

I have one, as others have said you can swap the rear right out. If you are wanting to change the front output stuff you need to swap the guts out of a non-synchro 205. Any 205 should make a donor for this...ford...dodge...chevy...IH and so on.

Good luck.
