I have had my 87 k5 on the road for about four months, and I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. When I come to a sudden stop my tranfser case makes a funny buzzing noise, and goes into neutral, the only way I can get it back in 2hi is to slam the lever all the way down to 4lo and back up to 2hi. I've lengthened the linkage as far as it will go but nothing happens. Also even when the truck is in 2hi the lever seems to slightly pull itself down a hair. The truck has a 4 inch suspension lift but I wouldnt think that would affect any linkage issues.

Could be one of two things.

1. Most likely is that your shift forks are worn out, and you need to rebuild the xfer case. Mine did that, but got stuck in 4 low. I would get this looked at sooner rather than later, so you are not stuck somewhere and stranded.

2. Your transmission/engine mouts are bad, and causing the whole driveline to move enough that it actually shifts because it moves relative to the shift linkage that is stationary. Check out the mounts and see if they are ok.

Most likely you need to rebuild/get a new case.
