NP-208 help

I have the stock NP-208 in my M1008. Basically it is slipping out of gear. When I roll up to a stop sign or coast the transfer case will slip out. If I put it in 4-lo and then back to 2-Hi it will stay in gear until the next time I coast. I've tried adjusting the shift linkage, but it didn't help any. I don't really want to sink any extra money into it because I really want a Doubler. A local wrecking yard wants $250.00 for one. I found a rebuild kit on E Bay for $150.00. Will it be easy enough to rebuild? Should I just pay the $100 extra and bolt in a transfer case with an unknown history?:doah:
 
$250 is ridiculous for a junkyard 208. Check some of the "parting out" threads on here. Otherwise, I'd check with a mil surplus joint if there's one close. Hell, it may still be cheaper to have one shipped to you at that rate. At least you would have a better idea of the condition.
 
Wore out shift fork? I have never tried to rebuild one, but from what I have heard, it isn't rocket science.

Yeah, they're pretty easy to rebuild. I just figured he could find another for equal to, if not cheaper, than the rebuild kit.
 
Your shift fork is most likely worn/bent or broken or it has worn pads.
A full rebuild kit is under 100.00 from Randy's ring and pinnion. If the fork is not damaged and its just the pads they are cheap.
208 is an easy rebuild. dont even need to pull the case just the back half. An extra set of hands to hold the main shaft is a help when you put it back together.
I would pull the back half of the case off and check the fork/pads before you buy anything.
 
had one do this. pulled drain plug and lots of parts come out with oil.

i swaped to a 205 tcase. and remaned the tranny and swaped tail shaft at the same time. :D

You in the san jose area? I have a few options that might help you out if you are local. Shipping transfer cases is expensive and likely not worth it for you.

I will be getting a M1008 with a NP208 in it that i wont be needing. Should have the truck at my place by the end of the month. 68k miles, unknown condition. Price = case of Hefeweizen and you pull it. :)
Or i have a 208 out of my stock K5 diesel with a known problem free history that will be on the garage floor around the early part of November. Sooner if you want to come pull it...and bribe me with some beer.
I also have a NP205 that i have been considering selling, already on the ground. Price is dependent on how much beer you bring.
 
Thanks for the offers. If I still lived in Salinas I would take you up on it... But, since I live near Yreka its a little far for me...:doah:
 
I have a good 208 you could have for a case of beer, but Yreka is a long ways...used to have to deliver up there.
 
Mine did this and it was just the shift forks. Order both forks and a basic 208 rebuild kit. I think that's under $100. You can pull it, rebuild it and have it back driving in the same day - unless you find more problems. But if you still get 2WD, 4WD and 4LO, everything in the case is probably fine.

Check the chain slack while you have it apart. Maybe find a local driveline shop that *could* sell you the chain or some other part if you need it. It's your call on bearings. I would inspect them and replace only what is bad (you can get some of these at the local car parts stores), but you could also buy a full set before you start if you're set on it all being brand new.

edit - OK, I see I replied to an old post. You probably already have it fixed. Oh well.

Naw I haven't got it fixed yet... I have another project that I'm working on too, and now its getting really cold outside. My garage is uninsulated so it isn't that fun to lay on cold concrete when its snowing outside...:doah:Thanks for the info though, every time someone tells me I can diy it I get fired up again.
 
I finally got around to getting it fixed. I pulled it all apart and found out my range fork was pretty much toast. I ordered a new one and stuck it all back together today. It was really easy to take it apart and put it back together. The Haynes manual even had a step by step how to with pictures in it. I just gotta get some more oil to put in it and give it a good test.
 
Ahhh, Another black box that you are no longer afraid of! Congrats on the DIY repair. You will never question tearing into a transfer case again. :D

Thats pretty much the way I feel about it. I put it off because I thought it would be too hard, but like someone said, you could take it out rebuild it and have back in the same day if you wanted to.

Where in Northern California are you Rufus??
 
Lard. Manteca isn't Northern California!?!!?! I live in NorCal, 20 miles from Oregon. Just kidding, Oil in, test drove her this morning after work. I get off at 6:30 am so me and a friend went to a local play area that has lots of hills and mud to play in. Everything worked great. The 208 is so much quieter with the correct amount of oil in it.:D
 
HaHa! Not too many people pick up on the meaning of Manteca!

Congrats on the transfer case build! Now I just need to get the 300 Lb NP203 installed in my truck. Sometimes I hate cast Iron transfer cases. Off to eat several boxes or Wheaties. :rolleyes:
