I searched and got 2 sided answers? I smelled gear oil and got underneath the Burb and found a leaking T-case output. It is low but smells like gear lube, it doesn't look or smell like ATF? Should I drain and refill with ATF when I replace the seal? It works fine, no nioses or poping out of gear issues? I read that the pump will not pump gear lube but my fluid is clean and not dark or red? I am confused?

Thanks,
Jake

It was designed to run ATF, so that's what I would recommend refilling it with.

Whew, good to know... My 241 was filled with gear lube too.. Got lots of extra ATF kickin around with no automatics in my posession, so at least it'll go to good use :D

I will drain and use ATF when I change the rear seal. Do you think it had gear oil in it for a reason, noises etc?

It's probly all somebody had in the shop at the time.
My 241 had ATF to begin with but I have been running 10w30 in it for years now.

241 should have ATF and is designed for it.. Main reason they use ATF in Xfer cases like 241, 208, and other cases that are married to a transmission is. That if you loose a seal between the xfer case and the auto trans, and there is a transfer of fluid. Gear oil or 10-30 intrusion will destroy the auto trans. Not as much on an issue if you have a manual trans. But a xfer case married to an auto trans should run ATF.

My guess is that your xfer case was either leaking or making noise and the po decided that gear oil will cut down on the problem that they were having.
