Can anyone tell me if this is for a TH400 ,with 32 splines ,going by the
bolt pattern ?...I'm not very familiar with these transfer cases..
It is for sale locally for $50,supposedly in good condition with 70K miles..

Drivers drop IFS truck, too blury to count the splines...all the aluminum cases have a 6 bolt flange to them so that 6 bolt pattern doesnt help. The bearing retainer looks large enough to be 32 spline.

Hmm.....the ad claims its from an '85 GM and is passenger drop..
Been listed a long time, but older parts dont always sell quickly here..
I thought the same thing, that all the aluminum cases look the same where they bolt to the adapter..

Was thinking of getting it for my 82 K2500--I have a spare 32 spline TH400 NP-208 for it,but the 241 is an upgrade, and I only had the sellers word that the NP-208 was in decent shape..

Nope, driver drop. Look at the connector for the switch. Its located at the top of the case and is on top in the pic

The 241 in my shed is a pass drop...15351555928953007611262635635594.jpg

Well,I guess unless the ad poster put the wrong picture in the ad,and that may well be,judging by the other parts piled near it--its of no use to me..thanks for the info..

I may send an e-mail and ask if they are sure that's the t-case they are listing in the ad...for $50 it would be worth gambling its a good one if it was a passenger side drop for a TH400..could just be a scam too,to get someone with 50 bucks to show up and get robbed..if it was a 32 spline unit someone would have snatched it up by now most likely..

The first year ive seen a 241 in a chevy was a 88 burb...

Most likely...there are dozens of the new IFS T-cases around here cheap,so many trucks have rotted frames and got junked..

Just FYI inputs are the same. So if you pull a 32 spline input out of a driver case that can open you up to buying a 27 spline passenger case and swapping it out giving you more options.

I've never had to take a transfer case apart--I just bought a good used one if I needed one, they were usually under $150 back in the day,for a NP-205,or whatever else you needed..|
(Still have one with a TH350 adapter in my garage I saved,and a NP-203 with a Th350 adapter that may need a chain--plus the spare NP-208 & TH400 adapter..)

My '85 Burb would need its 700R4 replaced if it were to be driven on the road again, and it has a 27 spline NP-208 in it--that could be converted to a 32 spline using the later drivers drop case input parts ?...hmmm...that's good to know..
Not sure I could do the swap myself, with my poor up close vision, especially if needle bearings are involved..

NP241 is a pretty darn easy case to "rebuild". Since the case halves come apart, alignment of anything that needs it, is easy. My memory is terrible, but I don't recall free range needle bearings, unlike the 205.

Is your internet fast enough to watch a video? I'm sure there are dozens on youtube showing disassembly and reassembly.

Only thing I found out, is it's not a situation where you skimp on RTV. I'm used to using a paper thin amount on stuff, I did that on the 241 case halves and it leaked.

I also seem to be one of the ones that has problems with the t-case venting fluid when filled to the factory specified level. It's apparently common knowledge that is "too much". At some point NP changed the design slightly, and cast a "baffle" over the vent to keep them from puking. Not everyone has this issue, but seems more likely to happen when gear ratios and tire sizes change. As high up on the case as the vent is, it seems to be related to the fluid being whipped around, not expansion.

Yikes,so a one year only deal,if you want one for a square body like my '82...that makes one harder to find, especially for cheap money..figures!.
:surepal:...
I see NP-208's for TH400's show up on CL once in a while for under $100...but not too often..and they sell quick..the 27 spline ones are much more common and don't sell as fast or for as much $$$..

The NP-208 in my pickup is original as far as I can tell, the tag on it is dated 1982..the oddometer shows 46,000 miles, and its a six digit one,the zero still showing,it might be original miles, the truck sat with a dead 6.2 in it for years before I got it..:dunno:

I fill the 208 about 1" below the fill plug threads,I found if I top it right off it tends to leak more--its just a slow drip, that takes 6 months to a year to lose a quart,so I haven't done anything about it..hasn't got any worse..might be coming from the vent, the seals at the yokes aren't wet..
I'd like to find out why it powers the front shaft even in 2wd,but I dont feel like taking it apart and disabling the truck and then not be able to repair it and put it back together--probably just run it till it has bigger issues and swap the spare 208 in it,if I have too..then mess with it on the bench maybe..
