I'm running an NP 208 behind a swapped in th350 trans in my 88 Sub. I've got the chance to buy an NP 241 out of, I believe, a 1994 1/2 ton GMC for $125. I'm looking at getting rid of my th350 in favor of a rebuilt 700R4 in the spring. Will that 241 be a direct bolt in behind a 700R4 or is there a certain year that will determine bolt in or no go?

I'm interested in the 241 for a S.Y.E. kit and slightly better low range and I know my 208 has seen better days but what I know about the 241, you could fit in a thimble.

94 1/2 ton would be a driver's side drop. You need a NP241 from an 89, 90, or 91 Chev to get the pass drop version. 89 is the only year the 241 had a cable speedo.

The adaptor bolt pattern is the same as a 208...if the 208 fit, the 241 will bolt up as long as it has the correct input gear. the 241 in the Chevy flavor was either 27 spline (700R-4) or 32 spline (NV3500, NV4500, 4L80) Not sure if the 241 was ever found behind the NV4500 or 4L80e in factory trim though. Either way, if it's a Chevy 241 the input will be 27 or 32 spline. You want the 27 spline.

Thank you guys. Good info and I completely forgot about the passenger/driver side drop. :doah:

The search continues then......hopefully I can find someone selling both for cheap.

They are out there, just keep scouring Craigslist for someone parting out the Suburbans. Have not seen a K5 being parted out for some time, but the Suburbans come up quite often.

IMO the VSS setup is superior (and easier to find being two years vs one), but that makes for additional modifications/changes to the truck.

I've seen a few Subs being parted out as well and only 1 Blazer. I guess nobody loves these old land whales anymore since gas went north of $3.00. :dunno: Most of the ones being parted are older than 1988, like around 85-86 with a 208 T-case. I'm in no particular hurry though so I can be picky.

Seeing quite a few out this way, unfortunately that means in a few more years, pickings will be even worse than they are now, especially since all the ones I'm seeing are the TBI ones. Not much older comes up anymore.

I'm sure in some of the rural areas you guys are more likely to see these things around for longer than those of us nearer large metro areas where scrapping is big business.

Being in no hurry certainly has advantages.

Not sure if the 241 was ever found behind the NV4500 or 4L80e in factory trim though.

My NV4500 came with a driver-side-drop 241, as did the one in my Dad's truck. And passenger-side-drop trucks were never offered with the NV4500, AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure that 4L80/241 combinations were also made, but it is possible that the ones I've seen were swaps.
