NP201

A guy I work with is having some work done on his 61 Chevy 1/2 ton. Having some transfer case issues with a NP201. The shop thinks that he needs a new shaft, twisted the splines. I haven't seen it and have no pix but thought maybe one of you guys had some experience with one. I would imagine that parts are getting hard to find-how long were they used and what were they most often used in? He said he thought it was divorced and had a pto output.
