NP203 for a NP208?

I've got a NP203 that has done me justice, but I don't have the time to get out as much as I'd like. So I'm looking for a part-time option. I don't really know anything about the NP208...think I've heard good things, but would like to know more.

I have a guy that is willing to trade NP203 for NP208...what do you think about that?
 
The 208 is a good case and will have a lower low range than the 203.

The trans to t-case adapters are different for each and depending on transmission the tailshaft can be different also.

Shifters are also different.

It's not brain surgery but it's also not a direct swap.

Edit: both driveshafts will change lengths also.
 
way to many mods required.

203 specific tail shaft in the tranny = full tear down just to swap it.

208 had some strength problems under hard use.

adaptors are diffrent. and only around 2-3 years of a tall adaptor 208 to save you from finding the diffrent crossmember the newer short adaptor units take.

shifters diffrent.

drive shafts diffrent and diffrent lengths. rear on 203 is slip joint on the shaft. 208 is slip yoke NON slip shaft.

and just not a good option for you.

best for you is get a part time kit and bolt it in your 203 and a set of locking hubs. then drive it.

and more info for ya.

th350 and 203 or 205 use same tail shaft in tranny.
th350 and 208 use longer shaft.

700r4 use 1 tail shaft stock as only 208/241 were offered factory.
700r4 has aftermarket shafts or swaped in if i recall from th350 to use 203/205.

th400 use 203 only tail shaft
th400 use 205 short and a long shaft for the 2 diffrent input lengths.
and diffrent shaft for the 208-241 if i recall.

To easily use a 203 or 205 on a 700r4 you can use the th350 adapter + 1" spacer.

The 85+ th400 tailshafts are the same regardless of t-case.

The 208 in question is coming off a TH400 and outta a 79 3/4 ton. Does that make a difference?

I seen that mile marker kit. Was leaning that way, then this other t-case came up and wanted to look into it. Thanks a bunch fellas'.

Here is another newbie ?... Whats the difference between a 10-bolt half-ton and a Dana 44? And is a 14-bolt the stock equivalent to a Dana 60? Want to up-grade axels before I start on the suspension...
 
The 208 wasn't introduced until '81 so it's not original to the '79.

As for the axles, the 10 bolt and D44 are basically equal but the 14 bolt is stronger than the D60 rear (big r&p, larger axle shafts).
 
Daily driver/hunting, fishing, Moab (moderate trails)...Looking to get the 4" shackle flip from ORD. They say I'll be able to run 35's without a problem.
 
With 35's either a 10 bolt or D44 will be ok unless you beat on it hard. In a perfect world I think everybody should have a D60 front even though they may not need one. :D

The 14 bolt is a great choice but it hangs low so with 35's it may drag some on the trail. A rear D60 is a good axle if you want more ground clearance. Not trying to change your mind, just sayin...
 
Might have to go with a 6" and cut some sheet metal... If I'm after the stronger axle choice.
 
Ok lets make this simple....Put a set of rockwells under the truck that takes care of your axles....Then drop a 205 t case that takes care of the t case.
