Heyall,
I've got an NP203/NP205 NWF doubler setup in my truck, a 1980 K10. The drivetrain has been in there for over a year, and wheeled hard maybe 4-5 times, but I've never had any issues with the Doubler set-up.
Towards the end of my last wheeling trip, and especially on the way home, the NP203 range box tends to pop out of HI range. It is most noticeable when cruising smoothly in any gear, and then decelerating by letting off of the gas. It will pop out of gear if you slowly reduce speed, or if you just release the gas pedal quickly. I am not able to push the clutch in, and simply pull it back into HI range, the only way to get in back in HI range, is pull over, come to a complete stop, and put it in.
Last night, I drove the truck, but I literally had to hold the NP203 shifter in place, to keep it from popping out of HI range. I could feel the gears wanting to pop out when I let off the gas, and I could feel them wanting to re-engage (or mesh) when I gave it some gas.
My first thought was that maybe the cab floor sheet metal wasn't trimmed enough around the shifter, but that isn't the problem, I watched the drivetrain movement relative to the floor last night. The only 'linkage' between the shifter and 'arm' on the NP203 case is a 5/16" threaded rod, with small heim joints and lock nuts. These don't appear to have changed position.
I'm afraid the problem is internal, maybe a weak spring and worn ball detent. Everything seemed to be fine, when I rebuilt the range box and transfer case, and I assembled the doubler. What do yinz think? Where would be a good place to start looking for the problem, hopefully external of the gear boxes? Thanks!
