NP203 Question

Well I was talking with a guy I know who rebuilds axels and transfercases. He was telling me that the 203's that are in my year truck has a "Stamped Steel" gear or something like that in the "differential of the Transfercase. Well he says that the older ones were "billet Steel", and the billet one is stronger. He says if he can find one he would swap it out for pretty cheap. Does anyone know about this?


Edit: he also said that a transimssion pan for a TH350 is a good upgrade. I cant remember what he said but I think he said Cast alumium pan. Does that sound right?

I really don't believe that, gear are not stamped. They have to be rough cast, cut, then heat treated. Besides, the gears aren't the weak point on a 203.

It is a good upgrade, aftermarket pans hold more fluid (cooler, cleaner fluid) and aluminum transfers heat much faster than steel (for a cooler running transmission), plus the aftermarket pans have a drain plug which will encourage you to change your transmission fluid more often (which means cleaner fluid ;)).

I really cant remember if he said gear but its something to do with the differentail in the 203. I do remember that much.

If you have the stamped one you cant use the wedge kit for part-time you have to use a replacement shaft. If you have the bolt together you can use the wedge part-time kit. Pm me if you need more info, I have some speck sheets from Milemarker I can email you.

And they help stiffen up the case which is always a good thing....;)
 
either way it's still a 203. i really don't care for them, really heavy and always hard to shift- even after the adjustment is checked.

Just keep in mind that if you happen to hit an aluminum tranny pan on a rock or other item it is more likely to crack and leak all your fluid out unlike a steel pan which would just dent and you get to keep driving. The aluminum pans do help stiffen the tranny case and does dissapate heat better but at the risk of cracking if it gets hit hard enough with anything.

Ya true, but i figure i am no hardcore wheeler. If i could get a stock size one i shouldnt have any problems with hitting it on something.
