Is there still any need / value for large bearing 205 cases ?

Cleaning out shop and got a few clean empty ones .

Even tho the low range sucks, probably still the best and most desirable tcase ever produced
I wouldn't say the best, but the most sought after, yes.
Because yes, the low range sucks.
I have seen a few 208s stand up to quite a bit!

Well I say best because for 99% of truck owners that didn’t need a true low low range they were probably the most robust case ever offered by an OEM, aside from a custom box it’s hard to beat a cast iron gear driven case. The internet made the 205 “the only transfer case to have”. Personally I’d take a 241 over a 205 but there’s no denying it’s a stout case

Being rated “the best” all depends on what is needed/desired from a T-case but I think it’s safe to say that a 205 is the most durable case design to ever grace a 1/2~1-TON truck.
Just look at the way the input straight through gear train is supported by numerous bearings at multiple supporting points directly at the gear mesh locations.
The idler gears combo setup having large opposing tapered bearings is a very stout and long life design.
All the cylindrical roller bearings allowing the gears that need it to float with great support.
Finally the front output shaft setup bearing support points are pretty tough too.

There are newer cases with much bigger input/output shafts that are very stout but they don’t hold a candle to the long term durability of a 205.

To give some support to my opinion on this matter just take a NVG-271 and a 205 ( both in known solid condition ) and drain all the fluid out of each and start driving each until one self destructs - willing to bet the 205 would not only win but you could fill the 205 back up with oil and drive it back.
Not say’n that it would not have serious destructive wear and it would most certainly need a great deal of attention to get back right with Jesus but the point is that it could run dry for much longer than most other cases and survive to live another day.

Yes 205’s blow big time in the reduction department but that’s why we have Doctor Watson for - and the shafts can be a failure point but there ain’t another case offered for our junk that can get ya back home from a real long way off with no oil…

I personally appreciate the Dana20, NP-203 ( for Doubler donations ), 208, 241’s & BW-4401/4470’s but the 205 definitely brings the goods in the bearing type, position and area of support over the rest.

For now and mine is 100% complete ready to run .
I am Interested if you are wanting to sell. I have a 72 K5 and I have already purchased the 2021 Silverado HD motor (6.6 liter L8T) and 6l90E trans. I am about ready to get the swap started. I really do not want to modify my factory small bearing NP205 which is why I am looking for another.

I…. Was…. Just…. Kidding….. (note the SMILING flip off)

Since we’re here, I think you knew the answer when you wrote the post and was playing the “I’ve got cool parts” game.
