np205 fluid help

help me out here. i have a 72 chevy blazer, got a new 383 stroker in it, new 700r4, with the output shaft for a np205. before i removed the old th350 trans and tcase i drained the tcase from the lower plug on the back and was suprised when transfluid came out, rather than gear oil. when i drained my trans and tcase the fluid smelt burnt or something. does any of this make sense? everywhere i read it seems the tcase wants 80w90 gear oil. do i have a broken seal? what do i do next? or is transfluid ok in tcase? with the new trans and engine in i filled all my fluids, oil, trans fluid, coolant... and then was thinking what about the tcase. so i pulled the plug on it just tonight and a little trans fluid poured out. nowhere near a qt., but definately more than a little puddle? help please. i've got the engine crankin, and was about ready to pull it out of the garage after 6 months, but now i'm hesitant. any help?

205's can take anything from 10W-30 to 80W-90 to ATF. The OEM spec is to use the same fluid the trans in front of it uses, just in case the seals leak and they trade fluids.

So with a 700R4, use ATF in the 205 and you'll be fine.

sweet! thanks! thats music to my ears, after sinking all the money for the engine and trans, amount many other things. should i fill it from the rear then, the transmission is new and was dry until i put fluid in it, and not very much flowed all the way back there thus far. i haven't had it running all that much though and never in park. but i've heard to fill it up to the hight hole plug? thats a good idea right?

For manual transmissions and transfer cases, you remove the fill plug (there is a fill and a drain plug, the fill plug is about midway up on the case). If the t-case is sitting level (or in the truck), fill it until fluid starts coming out of the fill hole (~a gallon for a 205, IIRC).

205 you fill to the top pipe plug level, yes.
