Hello Everyone. This is my first post so if I mess it up please forgive. I have been searching the web all day and can not find an answer. I know, not another 205 posts but please help. My Blazer's NP205 leaks from every bolt and cover on this thing and most of the time is very difficult to shift between the ranges. We'll I ripped it apart to overhaul it and every thing looks pretty good. Of course the seals need replaced but, The idler gear is the only thing that seems worn to me. I've tried to find pictures all day and the only good pic I found was on the site comparing LoMax 3:1 gears to factory. Even that gear does not look as chewed up as mine. Could this be a cause of the difficult shifts? Are my gears still good? If they are bad does anyone sell replacement gears without haveing to get another transfer case?

Thanks for any help,
Shawn

I don't think that area rides on anything. It looks like just part of the casting.

Try here and look at the photo of the idler gear going back in.

I did a search on "np205 idler gear" and came up with a few sites that had pictures of the parts being assembled.

Edit: Welcome to ck5!

Thanks

Cool, Thanks for the info. I didn't think it would have hurt it, however I had read a few 205 rebuild sites that said something about replace pitted gears. I didn't know if this counted as one. Now that just leaves the question of why it was so hard to shift.

Maybe it's in your linkage? Is it adjusted correctly and everything tight? Do you have a body lift? Just a thought.

No body lift, but I do have a lowered crossmember so I guess that could be the same thing. The linkage was all connected but did have a bit of slop in it. I could move the shift lever about an inch in all directions but it did still work, some of the time.

if it is auto and in gear it will be hard to shift it into 4 wheel.mine i have to rock it back and forth a lil sometimes to get it to drop into 4wheel.other than that it is pretty strong.if anything looks bad,you can replace it now just to make sure it is good.http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/np205.html
has a brakedown of parts and how they go together and part numbers to purchase what you need

It is an auto and this is my first Chevy 4x4. All the other 4x4's that I've owned have been Toyota's and I've driven some newer Jeeps with 4x4. All of them had a real smooth shift. Maybe this is the way the rock solid 205 shifts and I'll just have to get used to it. Price to pay for a rock solid Transfer case.:D

the 2 205s ive owned were a lil stubbern to get into gear sometimes.usually rockin it from forward to reverse while having pressure on the shifter makes it go in.its got double shift rails that push and pull the shift fork.so it sometimes gets caught a lil bit and needs to be rocked into place.at least as you said it doesnt break and doesnt usually have too many problems.
