Np205 question

Which one?

Early figure 8 maybe $75-100. Later circle pattern probably $100-150.

That's about it for me anyway. I personally don't think the demand is really there anymore for higher prices.

Might see $200 on the high end, but since 241's are so good, outside of the slip yoke there isn't a whole lot of reason to go 205, especially in a truck that didn't have one originally. Of course that's opinion, but I've got a 205 now, and a 241 with SYE will replace it. Rated for more torque, lighter, doesn't require hacking the floor up, the stock shifter works, etc.

No problem. I will say that if eliminating the slip yoke is important to you, the 205 will may be cheaper in that regard, since the SYE is like $400.

Of course, some of the 205's were slip yoke too, so you'd have to find one that wasn't, etc.

The NP241 isn't stronger than a 205. The 241 is an aluminum case and is chain driven. The 205 is steel case and is all gear driven. The main plus for the 241 is the gear ratio is lower. It all depends on what you are planning on doing with it. If you have high HP, TQ, and big tires then 205 is the only way to go. If you have mild motor then and 38 tire and below then the 241 will work out great. IMO

The 241 is a plenty strong case. I regularly abuse mine with 40" tires. The downside is it doesn't like to be whacked on anything. Yes the 205 has it beat with brute strength, but it sucks at everything else. All of the 241 breakage I see is when the front shaft is too long or somebody hits it on a rock. Rarely do you ever just see one puke its guts out. The 241D used to come stock behind the Cummins so they can take some power. Make sure the chain is in good shape, keep it full of fluid and keep it off the rocks.

241 is rated for more input torque. It's not "stronger", it's just rated to take more power.

The 241 case itself is likely going to be "weaker" if the design is similar, but I'll take torque rating, gear ratio, weight, and fitment over resistance to external impact.

Don't get me wrong, the 205 also has the advantage of nearly unending life without real maintenance, where the chain drive cases tend to need new chains and fork pads, but as easy as that stuff is to change, and the lifespan of those parts, longevity of parts doesn't factor into MY decision on what to run.

As always, everyone is welcome to their opinions. I've got a 205 case and it's been real good to me. But for my use, the 241 is a better choice.
