Trashed my T-Case in my 85 K5, and i have a NP205 sitting in the shed.
Whats involed in swapping the trashed 208 for the 205?
Would it be worth the hassle?

Thanks in Advance, im tring to get out of the straight line fun and into the 4x4 world. Been fun so far!

nice to see a new face on here. the search button will find this for ya easy. its been covered a lot in the past in the garage section. 700 to 205 and 700r4 205 try these and other combos.

in short tho. tail shaft work / spacer plate / crossmember moved / drive shaft work. but overall strength is a lot better. this all asuming you have 700r4 and a 27 spline input 205 with adaptor.

Guess i wont be going that route...

Know where i can get a fairly cheap 208? or know anyone who wants to buy a 205 :)

I have a disassembled NP208 minus the input gear. Welcome to it if we can figure out shipping.

Thanks for the offer, but im looking for something thats "ready to go". I'd have NO idea how to get that thing together.

Lets start with your 205.

How many spline does it have on the input shaft?

Does it have an adaptor at all? If so, what does it mate to?

We will see what your answers are before going further.

Male Input shaft, 2X splines, i would have to go count. And the adapter is a 4 bolt (looks like it will bolt up to my tranny) But Male output on tranny and Male input on T-Case doesnt "mesh" well.

you probably have a 10 spline np205 (male input gave it away) that was originally mated to a stick shift sm465. Not the best one to mate to a 700. I would get a th350(standard 3 speed auto)/np205 combo and get a spacer and use the 205 from that combo with the 700 you already have. Or get really easy and just get another np208 and bolt that right in place.

If you have 20-something, which should be 27, and four bolt adaptor, you will be just fine mating this to your tranny as long as its the 350 or 700R4. Just have to find the spacer to fit between the tranny and adaptor and you will be set.

Oh yeah, you mentioned male input and outputs; you need the coupling sleeve to fit over those shafts. Its just a sleeve about 4 to 5 inches long and has internal splines to fit around the male shafts. If no one here has one, I've seen them on eBay.

Randy's R&P is off the top of my head and eBay is another. Maybe post up a wanted ad.

Here are pics of the 205 (incase they help)

Yep, it will work fine with your tranny, again, as long as you have the 350 or 700R4.

I don't see the coupling sleeve inside the adaptor. Did you get one at all?

Nope no sleve at all, and yes I have the 700R4.

Another question before i do a search, will the 208 Shifter work with this thing if i rig up the linkage?

Im seing in my searches that I will need to change my 700R4 Output shaft. If so that sucks!!!!

You need the 205 linkage, not nearly enough leverage with the 208 shifter, entirely different, been there tried that. :)

What Dorian said. You need to find the 205 shifter which uses a pivot bolt that fastens to the side of the adaptor and holds the shifter itself in which mounts a small rod to the shifter rails brace.

There are plenty of pics of this type of shifter on the site. They don't look anything like the 208 shifter.

As for the 700R4 output shaft, thats what the spacer is for, to take make up for the length.

Alright i think im catchin on here, so on top of the "adapter" there is also a spacer that is needed. K, it was gettin confusing there for a sec. Trying to retain too much 4x4 info all at once.

I've done it with the output shaft change on a 700 and highly suggest going the spacer route.

From the looks of it you will need:

1.) Crossmember for that style transfer case (should be fairly cheap)
2.) NP205 shifter and pivot bolt
3.) Transmission to tcase adapter spacer
4.) 27 Spline female sleeve (make sure to put it in, in the correct direction)

I'm not sure but you may need to modify driveshaft (you may not). I'm not sure how the front driveshaft attaches on a NP208, but compare it to your 205 to see if a modification might be needed. You may also luck out that a stock truck with a 205 will have a driveshaft(s) that will work for you at a junk yard.
