What would happen if I removed the 4 bolts that hold the adapter to the tcase? The tcase is supported by a strong jack stand and the cross member is off. The engine, tcase and tranny are still in the K5.

well it depends what your question is but here goes:
The bolts help keep the pressure of the weight on the case and adapter, if removed the weight now is on the shaft which will hold for a few minutes fine but you are risking bending it, ot affecting the bearings supporting the shaft.
Wether you support the tcase and end up with a force pushing the tcase up, or you support the tranny and have the forces of nature pull down on the tcase, both are not optimal, if you are doing this temporary, you are OK, it won't fall if that is what you want to know, but I wouldn't keep it like this for long.

Put a jack stand or two under the transmission with a block of wood under the pan to spread the load. You don't want the tail end coming down. Its not good for your motor mounts or your distributor against the firewall. Support it then remove t case. Left mine like that for months while I rebuilt tranny and t cases.

Or put the crossmember back on and have it support tranny, and just remove the t case. Still not sure what your trying to take out of truck.

I just want the adapter and the ability to remove it as easily as possible. It is in a junk yard.

In that case, remove the tcase throw on the floor, remove the tcase adapter and walk away.
I don't see how else you think you can get it off easier.
