Going to look at buyin a new K5 tomorrow but kinda worried about the tcase. Truck is a 72 with a stock 350 and 4 speed manual tranny. The guy tells me that it doesnt have that "granny low" gear so im thinkin it may have the d20 tcase but i know nothing about them so any comments would be appreciated.

Dana 20's are a 2 speed t-case with about a 2.46:1 ratio. If it is a single speed T-case its probably a Dana 21. I thought only Ford used this case though.

I have one in my 70 K5. The only thing I dislike about it, is the "J" shift pattern.

According to a 1970 sales brochure I have, the Dana 20 was the standard T case. If you wanted the 205, you paid extra.

Jeeps and Scouts also came with this T case. The Scouts were actually twin sticked, from the factory!

Maybe I am misunderstanding but it sounds like the seller is saying the transmission doesn't have the "granny gear" . :dunno:

no he was just saying that it doesnt have a super low 1st gear even in low range, ive done a little research and it seems like it is pretty rare to find one, they offered 2 different manual trannys at the time and i think the d20 came with the 3 speed

Check out the specs section of this very site. :D

It looks like the D20 was available up to '73 only behind a manual trans. It also looks like the D20 has a 2.03:1 low range and that the only four speeds were the 465 that does have a granny low. If it is stock I would guess it has a three speed manual.

that clears things up some. I knew that the Dana 20's came in some early chevys but did not know what trans they were bolted up to.

I mistook the original poster as saying the t-case did not have a low gear which would make it a Dana 21 (a wortheless t-case)
